New Engine
« on: March 11, 2007, 01:13:00 am »
I've got an 87 with a  305 tbi engine in it. It  has about 130,000 on its and runs good, but I was thinking about  putting something else in the future. I"m not exactly sure what I want to do or how much it'll cost me, but I was thinking about a 383 stroker or maybe just a 350. I would  like to keep it tbi. What does it generally cost for the machine work for the crank and block for the stroker? How about vortec L31 heads? I hear these make pretty good power for a fair price. I know the vortec tbi intake is very pricey. Then I guess I'll have the upgrade the tbi unit to handle more power. I've seen the rebuilt units with larger bores. How would a tbi unit off a 454 work? What about a cam?- a little lope with good low end would be nice. What kind of grind would I need? I reckon I'll need a Custom chip for all of this and new headers or manifolds that'll work.  I'm not looking to build a race engine or anything. I was thinkin of a streetable 300-350hp with good low-mid range torque, which I guess should befairly easliy obtained with the right combinations. What do you guys think? Opinions and comments are appreciated.

I would stick with the 383.... That is what my next project is going to be. Look at  Summit or JEGS they have prices of what to expect if you just buy an assembly...

Keep us updated, I would like to know how it turns out.

A little tweaking to the ECM and the 350 or 383 will work with the TBI. As suggested Summit and Jegs offer good combo kits.

And there's always the adapters to make a 4bbl intake work with a tbi. I've never used one but I don't see why it wouldn't work if you already have a Vortec style manifold.
