Catalytic converter question
«
on:

I dualed out my truck a while ago with a 40 series flowmaster, and it should pretty loud but it's not. I think the cat is quieting it down a bit. Is there anything I can do without messin up my cat? What is the cap at the bottom of the cat for?

what's your state's emissions laws? Here in central IL there are none. I have true duals but with glass packs on all my trucks. I have a flowmaster super 40 series on my 91 s10 blazer 4x4 with the 4.3 v-6 and it's plenty loud with just a single exhaust but I had the cat cut off when I had it installed. I guess I don't know what the cat will do for sound as I always have them cut off.

Yeah all vehicles that come with a cat must have a y pipe unless you put two on and run two pipes.

If your cat has a plug that looks like a freeze plug you have a pellet style cat. That is the most restrictive thing out there. Even if you pull the plug and remove the pellets there is a waffle plate in there that will hold some of the pellets and will restrict the exhaust. Replace it with a ceramic honeycomb style cat. You can get universal ones for around $50-$75.. these will flow better and will help you get some better sound for the exhaust.

would it be ok to pull the plug and see what it's gonna do, or is it not a good idea.

If you run a y-pipe it is a single exhaust no matter if you have dual tips or not and it will never be all that loud. If you have plenty of extra money and have to have a cat get dual cats and grab another flowmaster 40 series and have a true dual exhaust put on it. I would think that would give you the sound your looking for.

I know I can get my sound with a new cat. I have had other trucks with the Y pattern exhaust and they have had plenty of volume. Just looking to ditch this twenty+ old cat that is restricting my exhaust to get a better sound. Or uncap it and drop some pellets.

as mentioned before, it depends on the type of cat. I have one of those round straight thru cats on my blue burb and b4 i put a muffler on it, she was LOUD!!!
On my 79 big 10, i have one of those flat oval types w/ the plug. I have no muffler on it and can hardly hear the sound. That type of muffler robs the sound...no need for a muffler at allll.

I am going to replace it with a honeycomb style cat because this pellet style one sucks. Anyone know where I can get one for 85 1/2 ton for a good price?

Yeah just help poison the air you and I breathe to live and help ruin the environment so your truck will sound louder! Great advice!

actually we're all doing our part to poison the air and drive up gas prices and what not by driving these old v8 trucks but we love em. Now if I can just convert a 95 geo metro into a truck lol.
