Installing Air Conditioning......

I'm looking at this 1980 swb that doesn't have a/c.  What kind of costs am I looking at if I want to have this installed?  I've been told that nothing aftermarket will really perform well either.  Is this accurate?  Thanks.

Best bet is to find a donor with ac = cheapest way out. An aftermarket AC will work fine in the truck but cost you an arm and a leg

my 84 gmc came from the factory without a/c. Somewhere down the line someone installed the a/c components from an isuzu pup and it blows ice cubes it is so cold. The really cool part about it is that big bulky gm a/c box that is usually taking up a lot of space under the hood isn't there.

My advice to you is patience. And please research every product before you buy it. I went the donor route and hit every junk yard in town and collected plenty of parts to fill my tree lawn on trash day. I ended up going to JCWhitney and purchaced a kit for about $1000, that I was able to charge myself with a  R134 kit. I did however, use some of the junkyard parts such as ducts and vents to give the appearance of a stock look but I used the universal air condition controls that came with the kit. I found it was less of a headache, and I just wanted to cool the cab . I also had to modify the way I mounted the power steering pump to accomodate another pulley . Here's a link to my page, I don't give much discussion to it yet because, I can barely remember what I did, it was 2 years ago. Once I had all the parts It took about 1 weekend.1977 Chevy Cheyenne  I will probally talk about it more soon I do have to weld one of the brackets in the kit. I took off from a light at full throttle with the air on to ya know show off and when I got to the next light I heard a squeaky belt, only to discover I cracked a weld on the bracket causing the compressor to sit crooked and make a lot of noise.

I had opportunity to check out your website. WoW - I like how you did your truck. I've got an 86 chevy 4x4 truck with similar paint - although your's was professionally done. I got my truck recently - after patiently waiting for 5 years for the right truck!! - it was worth the wait! Now they fun begins to modify the truck the way I dreamed it to be! Tell me, which part did you begin with? (engine, wiring, interior...etc). By the way, mine used to have an AC, which was taken out since it was in a much cooler place (WY), but out here in AZ, AC is a must-have!!! no doubt about it! I'll have to look into getting an AC soon.

If your truck had A/C and it was removed, I have a complete R134A system from an 86 Short Bed in my shop. Still connected together. It should fit right in. PM me if interested.
