87' Custom deluxe 4X4 mode
« on: July 08, 2006, 08:54:00 am »
Hi

I am writing this message from a country far away where people know almost nothing about Chevrolet pickup trucks so bear with me.

How do you put an 87' custom deluxe pickup truck in 4X4? Now it's only rear wheel drive. The truck has auto transmission if it makes a difference.

I borrowed this from a friend for few days but now can't reach him therefore I am asking here.

Thanks in advance,

Berk

First, Is it actually a 4x4?
How to tell, there will be a shifter on the floor labeled 2H - 4H - N - 4L?
If it is there, then you should have locking hubs also.  If you want it in 4WD, you need to move the selector to 4H and then lock the hubs.

Hubs will automatically lock if it's an 87 I believe...

What should I set the gear before moving the lever on the floor? Does it matter?

And what do you mean by hubs? My vocabulary is suffering a little here. Are they on the front wheels?

Thank you for the help

Yes, the hubs are on the front wheels.....they are either manual or auto locking. Auto hubs have a smooth front face. I think you should leave tranny in park or nuetral to move transfercase selector.

YOu can go under 25 mph and then slide the lever from 2h to 4h, all in one motion.   At least, that is how my 91 works.  YOu can go any speed when going from 4h to 2h.  Just unlock the hubs afterward (back up 10 feet when you get a chance).

I tried that in a 1981 4x4 I drive for work and it won't come out of 2H. Maybe it's just old...who knows.

Hi

Turkey in summers, Sweden in winters. Originally from Turkey.

Thanks for the replies. I did not get around to trying to put the truck in 4X4 yet, I will post the result here. I don't think there will be any problems, directions I got here was simpler than I thought.

Regards, Berk

Nothing to it.  Only thing to remember is to shift the transmission into neutral (N) before shifting the transfer case through Neutral(going from 4 lo to 2 hi or anything)

Right, like 1976scottsdale says, going beyond N requires the trans to be in N and vehicle stopped.  Don't go over 40 mph in low though.

Just make sure you don't play around with shifting the lever---Throw that joker into place or you will get ginding.  Going back from Low to high will require a slight pause in Neutral of the drive selector.

Dont forget to unlock the hubs after going back to two wheel drive.  If it is automatic hubs, you must put your trans in reverse after the switch.  Back up about 10 feet to automaticallly release the hubs. Manually, well, you gotta do it manually.
