What cam???
« on: April 22, 2007, 05:59:02 am »
HELP!!!
I want to buy a gear drive for my engine, but there is one for a factory roller cam, and non-factory roller cam... What is the difference in the factory and non-factory... All I can tell you is it is a GM crate 350... I believe the valve cover says "Targetmaster", but honestly, that means nothing to me... I will try to get the casting ## from it, if I can...

I can go ahead and buy a new cam.... But I also need help deciding what to get... Hopefully someone can help me... Just wanting a mild street/strip package...

I want a rough idle.... and good low/mid power... Some suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I know some more info would be needed, just let me know what I need to find out and I will try to get it...

Thanks!

your engine is not a roller cam/lifter set up unless someone changed it. Can I ask why you want a gear drive? They are quite annoying and don't last as long as a chain. I can recommend you a cam but you need to give more information. What type of intake are you using? What is your exhaust system? What final drive gear ratio and trans combo do you have? Are you going after more streetability or tire frier?

You do not want to use a gear drive on a roller cam.  I personally wouldn't recommend one at all, but that is just me.

Honestly, I like the sound... If it will hurt me more than anything then I guess I will not go that way... I work for Cloyes Gear, and can purchase one for about $35, figured it was a good deal so why not....  I already have a Hi-pro set from Cloyes, so I could just as easily use that...

Right now I have everything stock... But I am looking for recommendations on a good combo... I would like at least 350HP... Not my daily driver, so I can shoot for around 8-10mpg... I was considering converting to TPI, the speed density version, so if that would help with your recommendation....

Like I said, all stock... But the headers and dual exhaust... 350 tranny, and 3.23 (or is it 3.18???), anyways... Stock as far as I know in the rear....

You do not want to use a gear drive on a roller cam.  I personally wouldn't recommend one at all, but that is just me.

Capt.... Would you mind explaining to me why??

Thanks guys, for anything that you can come up with...

Well I wouldn't want a noisy engine personally -

If you want a decent upgrade go with the Edelbrock Performer RPM Cam and intake. Plop a nicely tuned Q-jet on there and some headers. You'll get your cheap thrills without doing a complete engine rework... There are a lot of other ways to improve your performance but just don't go any bigger than the RPM without doing some engine work...

Two words Lunati VooDoo....or is that three...go with the  60102LK

Here are the specs:

Advertised Duration: 262/268
Duration @ .050 IN/EX  219/227
Gross Valve lift IN/EX  .468/.489
LSA and ICL  112/108
RPM Range  1400-5800

Quote
Mid-level performance street cam with excellent drivability. Exceptional replacement for "muscle car type cams" with automatic transmissions. Works well with stock type exhaust manifolds and dual plane intake with mild 4 bbl carb. This is an AWESOME 4x4 and Performance Marine cam where "DRY" exhaust is used. Improved valve springs and roller rockers are recommended. Excellent in oval port engines.
