torque converter

Trying to install torque converter on th400 behind a 454, (mid 70's) only about 15/16 inch from torque converter bolt pads to edge of trans.  i can bolt to engine, converter spins until the mount pads, the have to help it onto them, have removed converter few times, spin and it sets in to front pump. Any ideas.

Are you trying to install the converter onto the flexplate and then install the trans? This is a HUGE no no. Make sure the converter is fully seated on the stator support (fatter splined shaft) and the input shaft (skinnier shaft) and the two lugs on the front pump (square notches) Rotate the converter several times while rotating then install trans to engine then connect the converter to flexplate bolts.

Trying to instal torque converter on trans first, then bolt to engine.

Follow the steps I said above. Just make sure the converter is fully seated
