4" lift kit - extra parts question
« on: June 02, 2007, 07:30:07 am »
Hi,

I just bought a 4" lift kit for my 86' GMC and I was wondering if any of you guys
has one installed on your truck.

My question is, do I need to buy a new (extended ?) pitman arm with a 4" lift
or does it apply only on 6" and higher ?

On the instruction sheet I got, they says that the pitman arm is required on 6" only
but I just want to make sure, that would be sad to complete the lift installation
and you can move because of that extra part !

Thanks,

Ray.

NO but you should replace the steering arm because the drag link runs longitudinally on your truck. http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT805.aspx

i put a 4 inch kit in my 85 gmc too. i put the drop pitman arm in just because it came with the kit. it is true that you can use the stock arm without any problem. the new pitman isn`t extended, it is just has a bend in it to compensate for the lift and put it back to the stock configuration. if i remember correctly, if you stay with the stock pitman arm you may have more bumpsteer than the dropped arm. i could be wrong about the bumpsteer. i put my lift in like 7 years ago and my memory isn`t what it used to be.

Thank you guys !

I love this forum and you all peoples are so helpful :)

Okay, well the pitman arm ain't included in the lift kit so I wanted to be sure
not buying a useless part (kinda expensive too ! 125$ CDN for a piece of iron !)
But I'll install it anyways if it helps eliminating bumpsteer and keep "custom alike" feel
to the direction.

Ray.

Don't use the drop pitman arm with the 4" lift it will cause more bump steer. The inclination of the drag link with the drop pitman causes bump steer. Either use the steering arm or leave the stock one.

The drag link drop works better than the drop pitman also with the 6" lift.
