454 to 350 swap question
«

I'm going to rebuild the 454 as time and money permits so I'm going to drop in a 350 I already have that was going to go in another project. I already know this is pretty much a direct bolt in as far as mounts are the same, tranny will bolt on etc. How about the exhaust. Is it the same between the two engines? Thanks for any replies. 76 chevy 3/4 ton 2wd 454/ th400

I did this in my 74 when I pulled it out as I wanted to build the 454 slowly within my budget back then. The exhaust will require fabrication and there will be a few small differences that I'm sure you can easily figure out but it's pretty straight forward.

Ok I put the 350 in today and it was a complete easy drop in, I even used the torque convertor from the 454 as the flywheel on my 350 has dual pattern on it. I still need to figure something out for exhaust though, maybe I'll buy the cheap summit headers for now.

I could be way wrong here but, I think the torque converter stall speed is somewhat determined by cam size. If the 350 has a big difference in size you might notice lag or slam shift on take off.

Blazin, you know you may be right, I have no idea cause I haven't even started it yet. When I get something figured out for an exhuast I guess I'll figure out the hard way!

You CAN'T use a 350 flywheel on a 454. They are NOT the same.

There is no 350 flywheel going on a 454. My flywheel on my 350 has dual bolt pattern for the torque convertors, this his how I was able to bolt the 454's torque covertor onto my 350 flywheel. I'll let everyone know how it turns out when I get some kind of exhaust figured out.

well got the 350 going in the truck yesterday. I used factory manifolds for now. There doesn't seem to be any issues with the torque convertor and plenty of bottem end torque.
I had originally built this 350 for my 72 chevelle and it's been sitting the last couple of years waiting for me to get the body done on the chevelle, well the body still has a ways to go so I think when I get the 454 rebuilt I'll stick it in the chevelle instead.
This motor makes the truck sound really mean with the pete jackson noisy timing gears and the lopey cam, I'm sure I'll be turning some heads.
