Truck cuts off when put in gear
« on: June 25, 2007, 10:50:53 am »
Hi
I am new to the post and I am having a problem with my 1987 Chevy V10 5.7l   When I put the truck in gear and let off the brake it cuts off.  It also cuts off if I put it in gear, hold the brake, and give it gas.  The check engine light is on and the smog pump is running.  Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Have you read my post with mine doing the same thing?  http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=3984.0
Do you know how to retrieve the codes?
Jumper the top right 2 terminals on the ALDL with a jimclip and turn the ignition to run don't crank it, count the number of flashes the first code is always 12 ->  Flash.....   Flash, flash.

What are the codes you are getting?

Sorry I didn't see your post til after I posted mine.   I put a jumper in A and B yesterday but the check engine light stayed solid.

No problem, I just wondered if you had read it yet.

Is the engine off and the switch in the "run" posistion?

This is where you need to jumper it:

Yes we jumpered it between A and B and then turned the ignition switch to run  (did not crank it) but the check engine light stayed solid.  We tried several times to make sure that the jumper was in properly.

You're sure you are jumpering the two correct pins and that there are 2 metal tangs in the connector right?

CHART A-2 - WON'T FLASH CODE 12 "SERVICE ENGINE" LIGHT ON

 Circuit Description :

There should always be a steady "Service Engine Soon" light when the ignition is "ON" and engine stopped. Battery ignition voltage is supplied to the light bulb. The ECM will turn the light on by grounding CKT 419.

With the diagnostic terminal grounded, the light should flash a Code 12, followed by any trouble code(s) stored in memory.

A steady light suggests a short to ground in the light control CKT 419, or an open in diagnostic CKT 451.

Test Description : Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.

If there is a problem with the ECM that causes a "Scan" tool to not read Serial data then the ECM should not flash a Code 12. If Code 12 does flash, be sure that the "Scan" tool is working properly on another vehicle. If the "scan" is functioning properly and CKT 461 is OK, the PROM/Mem-Cal or ECM may be at fault for the NO ALDL symptom.
If the light goes "OFF" when the ECM connector is disconnected, then CKT 419 is not shorted to ground.
This step will check for an open diagnostic CKT 451.
At this point the "Service Engine Soon" light wiring is OK. The problem is a faulty ECM or PROM/Mem-Cal. If Code 12 does not flash, the ECM should be replaced using the original PROM/Mem-Cal. Replace the PROM/Mem-Cal only after trying an ECM, as a defective PROM/Mem-Cal is an unlikely cause of the problem.

Ok I went back this afternoon and checked to make sure that I was puttiing the jumper in the correct 2 pins and the service engine light still did not flash so I unhooked the ECM and the light went out.  Guess I will order a new ECM tommorrow and see if that takes care of the problem but the one that is on the truck now is less than a year old.

Got my new ECM yesterday, code 12 flashes now, and the service engine light went out.  Now I have to figure out what is causing my other problem.  Thanks for the help.

When it starts flashing the code again, pull the codes back out and let us know what they are.
You can also check this out it has a description of each code and a few checks:
