my 77 C/10 has a problem and I am stumped.
« on: July 07, 2007, 10:19:16 am »
Yesturday my mom took it into town to get some lumber(not much but it wouldn't fit in her car). on the way back she said it started to sputter a little so she gave it a little more gas it sputtered some more then died. so me and my moms boyfriend went down to see what the problem was. we figured it was the fuel pump cause the one that was on it came off my old 400SBC that i pulled when i put my 350 in. it would start and idle real well but when you gave it some gas and let off it would sputter and die right away. so we fooled around with it for awhile checked lines wires cables everything looked good so we ran and got another fuel pump well that didnt work. it will start and idle sorta smooth untill you give it some gas then itwill start to rev a little then sputter and die or run really rough. we havent had a chance to look at it since but im just wantin some input from ya guys. im thinkin maybe there in a hole or crack in the fuel line somewhere.

its got a Q-jet four barrel and its a 350 pretty much stock.

I agree, you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

funny ya guys should say that, when i checked it out there was a vaccuum hose split and off off the carb. it goes from the front middleish on the carb to the choke thing on the passenger side. I'm not sdure that would cause a problem though cause i hooked it back up and it didnt help.

any idea where i should look for a leak?

If it was a vacuum leak, it would seem that it would not idle smoothly.  But, what the hey, spray some WD40 around the hoses and gaskets and see if the idle increases.  If it does, you found a leak.

I think it would be an accelerator pump on the carb myself.

I would check all of your fuel filters. A lot of times you will have one by the tank or between the tank and the pump someplace and you should have one either on the carb or just before it.
I have seen this type of problem from a  dirty fuel filter many times.
The motor will start and idle fine but as soon as you go to throttle up it will stumble and die if you dont let off right away.

Do try the WD-40 trick also as the Sarge suggested it does not take much.
Just start someplace like around the carb base and go slow. Work your way around with a spray and then stop, then a little more. This is a good way to find a leaky gasket on your carb to manifold or on the intake gasket set. Just dont get it on the hot headers. cough, cough.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

I still say it just may be your accelerator pump in the carb.  However, it could also be a choke adjustment now that I think about it some more.  Are you sure the butterfly is open all the way when the engine in warm?  It should be.  If not, it would be like it is choking out---not enough air going into it when accelerating.

Check and make sure the choke is open and pop the distributor cap off. Make sure the carbon button isn't burned.

well we have fooled around with it a good bit recently...rebuilt the carb, adjusted the timing, found no gas or vaccuum leaks...
it has good spark
its getting gas
it will run sometimes but very badly. it sounds like it had a huge cam and a bad miss at the same time. and giving it any gas will kill it if it doesn't stall on it's own first.

my mom's boyfriend think it either jumped time or its the cam goin out

Did you remove the distributor cap and check it?

the gas was put in the tank the day before. and it smells/looks like just gas.

yes. it looks alright. It's a pretty much new MSD HEI cap. I only put a couple hundred miles on it after puttin new plugs, wires, and the cap on it.
