Ignition\Alternator problem
« on: July 07, 2007, 08:44:32 pm »
Hey guys, I was driving home earlier tonight and started to smell a little bit of electrical smoke coming from under the dash of my truck. The truck is a 1979 Chevy K20 4X4 with a 6.6 in it. After I noticed the smoke I also notice that my ammeter was sitting just below 13 volts so that meant that my alternator wasn't charging. After further investigation of the problem I revealed that the alternator is working properly. However I am not getting any ignition voltage to it wich is causing the charging problem. I have been succsessful at making the alternator charge temporarily but there is still a short somewhere that is cause a draw on the battery. If I disconect the plug on the alternator I noticed that the gage will still read the voltage which means my ignition wire is shorted to the load wire at some point in the wiring harness. Any help located these two wires inside the cab would be greatly appreaciated! Also any advice anyone can give me on this problem would also be helpful. I'm just about at ropes end on this problem and have been tempted already to drive it into the lake! Thank you in advance.

Check your fusible links. They are near the starter and at the junction block on the firewall.

I whipped this problem man, somehow the wires connected to the starter got up into the manifold (go figure) and melted together and the next thing you know nothing works like it should. Anyway I got it fixed and it's back on the road.
