Power Window ??
« on: July 16, 2007, 06:57:08 pm »
I have an 82 C-10 that I'm converting to power windows and locks. I got the wiring harness from ebay, so I'm not sure exactly where it's from. (I assume from the same vintage truck) The locks work, and both window motors work from the drivers door two button switch. BUT the RH window motor won't work from the RH switch. I've checked continuity on all the wires. I have 12v on the pink wire on both switches. But the RH window switch still doesn't work. I have used two different switches on both the LH and RH window connectors. Based on the GM service manual schematic, everything checks out.

Any suggestions??? I don't know what to check next.

Disassemble the RH switch and clean the contacts with electrical parts cleaner...works 99.9% of the time.

Did the contact cleaner thing. And tried a new switch. Neither worked.

Chester, Va?  Hi neighbor. Henrico here.

You are sure you have 12 volts going into the switch, and the 12 volts don't come out of the switch when activated?  This is'nt complex.   Are you using a voltmeter?  Double check the current into the switch and out of the switch when activated.

take your test light to ground and probe cavity 1 at the window motor while operating the switch up/ you should have B+. Probe cavity 2 and when you operate the switch down you should have B+. If ok take your test light to B+ and touch cavity 1 again while pressing down. It should light up. Touch cavity 2 and press up. it should light up. Report your results. Note cavity one is the dark blue cavity 2 is the brown wire

I'll try that test. I do know that w/ no power to the harness, both leads going to the RH motor are grounded.

But, I think I have a wiring harness from 2 different generations of truck. I have a GM service manual for an 81. It shows the LH window switch has 5 posts and the RH window switch w/ 3 posts. The wiring harness I have has a LH switch socket w/ 6 posts and a RH switch socket w/ 3 posts.

Can anyone tell me how many posts are on the window switch's on their truck?? I think the correct combination is: LH w/ 5 posts and RH w/ 3 posts. OR: LH w/ 6 posts and RH w/ 5 posts.

Can some one help me confirm either of these configurations?

They aren't grounded you just have continuity through the circuit. Once voltage is applied to the motor it is dropped across the motor and you will see zero volts after the motor.

You should have 6 wires at the LH connector

Problem solved. I had a post 82 wiring harness in the LH door and a pre 82 wiring harness in the RH door. I got a post 82 RH Power Window switch and wiring pig tail. Wired it into the RH door and everything works properly.

Thanks for all the input.

Just to clarify. GM changed the power window switch's and wiring harness, I think, in the '82 model year. So the power window wiring and switch's prior to 82 and for 82 and later are not interchangeable. To state it differently, you can't mix the power window wiring and switch's from the different eras. That was the root cause of my problems.
