HOW CAN YOU TELL A SHORT WATER PUMP FROM A LONG WATER PUMP?     WHERE IS THE DIFFERENCE?               THE ENGINE IS A 305.

The biggest difference it the short one is right up against the timing chain cover while the long one there is a good amount of clearance, around an inch.

The easiest way for me to tell is that the long water pump has provisions on one side for the power steering pump mounting and on the other side a provision for the lower alternator bracket.  A short pump has neither.

No 73-87(91) trucks ever used a short water pump, and no 305 ever had one either from the factory due to the fact that all used the new bracket system.
