50° from TDC and running - 82 C-10 350 SB
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:01:32 am »
I just replaced the distributor with a rebuilt one and the truck runs and idles, but I cannot get the timing mark on the balancer to come to 0° TDC. The timing light indicates that it is off by 50°. I just rebuilt the engine and replaced the balancer. Could I have been given the wrong balancer? It looked physically like the original.

make sure you are on the #1 cylinder with your inductive clamp. Put the #1 piston to TDC (remove the plug and watch it come all the way up) Then verify your timing mark. You lined the balancer up on the keyway right?

There are balancers with marks in different places. Some are made with a mark at about 2 o'clock and some are made with a mark at about 12 o'clock. I got the wrong one so I cut another groove in it with a hacksaw.

123,

Do you have a SB 350? Do you know what engine the balancer you got was for?

Yes I have a 350 SBC. I discovered this when I went to replace my timing chain cover. The new cover had the mark at 12:00. My new balancer was also at 12:00,but it was too difficult to see it behind the water pump so I used my old damper to line up the position for the pointer.

I then used the pointer to mark my new damper to cut the groove.

I don't know which car or truck this damper fits but there are more than one style. They are balanced the same, they just have the marks in a different place.

It looks like you have the right balancer there pugsy but a 305 timing cover. A chrome timing tab is like 5 bucks and lines right up where you put yours but it's always good to check
