what am i doing wrong
«

to start off with i have a 355 four bolt main pretty much stock except for a lunati 00016 cam, edelbrock 600 cfm elec choke, edelbrock performer intake, flowtech headers, accel hei distributer, msd coil, accell 8.8 mm wires, 1 inch open carb spacer, k+n filter all in my lil 84 shortbed, the thing acts like it has a miss till it gets above 2,200 rpm then she will scream till about 6,200 rpm. but i daily drive this and the miss is driving me nuts. it makes it hard to drive cause she wants to cut out all the time. and then people always want to race cause she is lopey but i stab the thottle and she bogs and choke till about 2,200 rpm and then screams. what am i overlooking. by the way timing is at 14 degrees

sounds like a simple ignition system miss to me. Check your wires and connections. Check your plugs. Try wet testing the wires and see if it gets worse.

not to sound dumb what do you mean "wet test". i have put in new plugs, and the wires are brand new.

I HAD gotten bad "NEW" wires before . so check each one individually.... remove each wire one by one from spark plug end, insert a screwdriver on the inside of the wire and with the motor running get the screwdriver metal part about 1/8" away from a metal bracket and check for sparks from metal part of screwdriver to metal bracket (grounded). we will be able to know right away your faulty wire if you have one.

I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but did you put the wires together with the right boots? I know the Accell wires come with two sets of boots(one for points and one for HEI). I know for a fact I didn't put the HEI ones on mine, and my truck had that same hiccup. I'm not sure if the wires were the problem, but it'd be something to check.

Wet test means mist the wires down with water and see if it starts to run worse. Maybe you should check each plug and see if you have a cracked insulator.

put a vacuum gauge on it, check your compression, check your valve adjustment.

I would say your carb is loading up till you open the butterflies. I never did have much luck with the eldebrock carbs. it seems they work good for a year or two then go tits up.

That depends. Is it a stock valve train?

Sounds like you overtighted the valves, check with a vacuum gauge, should have around 17 - 20 steady.
