Wiper Problems
« on: September 09, 2007, 06:10:37 pm »
Ok besides trying to fix my guage lights this weekend i also replaced my wiper motor and switch and it does exactly what it did before. Before if i turned the wipers on they would go slowly up then stop. Then 2 mins. later they would go back down or get stuck again. Also water would shoot on the windsheild. After replacing the motor and switch it still does all that same stuff except shoot water. The wipers even move when the switch is in the off position. Does anyone have a clue what is wrong cause i really need to get these fixed???

Your truck isn't a 79 is it? My dad has gone through a 79 C20 and his current 79 Big Ten, and i'm telling you I will NEVER purchase a 79! Something about the dash harness spaghetti bowl of wires and the countless dumb hick mechanics who think they know how to bypass a fusible link here, a little foil on a fuse there, and COOL the dash lights work, until you hit a bump, then they go out and wipers come on by themselves! Best bet is to yank out the entire cluster and pad, like i've done twice. Trace down all the wires and wrap them in groups with electrical tape.
Stomp my flag and I will stomp your @$$!

Did you replace it with a new or used motor? Check your connections and the motor ground.

typically it grounds down near the front of the block in front of the mechanical fuel pump boss. Some came grounded to the alternator bracket (the long bolt)

Does the truck have delay wipers? If so try replaceing the modulater. Its a box that your wiper switch wires plug into under your dash.

Also More Importantly I forgot - ground your battery really good to the body......since that is what your wiper motor is grounded too also.

My wipers were coming on by themselves. I replaced the switch with a new one which did nothing. Then I replaced the modulater with a used one and everything worked for a couple of months(we dont get much rain).
Now the wipers only work on the slow speed regardless of the switch position. Example delay and fast position on the switch only give you a regular slow speed. The washer fliud works. Sometimes you have to play with the switch to get the wipers to shut off.
My battery has a good ground to the frame but im not sure how its grounded to the motor. I will have to look.
Any ideas whats wrong? Truck is an 81.

The park switch is in the motor. To test the delay module simply unplug it and connect the harness together without the module connected and see if your problem goes away. Usually the module will just cause intermittent to fail. 95% of the time it's the motor

On my 81 the wiring harnesses are different. I cant just bipass the modulater.
I dont understand the wiring either. Been a while since I looked at it but it sure has a lot of live wires going to the switch.
Guess I have to replace the wiper motor and see if that fixes it.
