Popping noise up front
«

I've got a 1985 K10 Silverado with a 4" Rancho lift and 33's. I have the infamous "popping" noise coming from the front drivers side when I turn the wheels. I've checked and replaced the drag link ends and rod ends but it's still there. I checked the frame around steering box for the crack everyone talks about but I don't see anything out of the ordinary.
Just wondering if those who have had this happen found the crack only when they removed the steering box? I've had a couple of shops look at it too and they can't find the source either.
Anybody know or have any ideas?
Thanks,
Greg

I had my upper control arm shims fall out once. It made a noise I could describe as a "pop pop pop". Are you sure all of your shims are in place?

you could check your balljoints, wheel bearings and axle joints. Does this happen when you are going around a corner or just turning period. you could have some metal to metal contact somewhere.

CHECK THE BEARING THAT IS ON THE STEERING SHAFT UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER. there is a sealed bearing carrier where the 2 shafts connect. maybe there is no bearings on it anymore.

You might want to check your steering box...I have seen a couple instances where the frame cracks around the bolts that hold the steering box on...for what its worth

I would check the axle joints before anything else. They are the most common thing to make a popping noise.
You probably already know but if you don't, don't try to check your upper control arm shims as you don't have them.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
Ball joints and axle joints have been checked and are good, and there are no cracks in the frame - unless they are behind the box out of sight - I'm going to take it off sometime in the near future and check the frame behind it.
I'll check the steering shaft too, I checked the rag joint but that was it.
Thanks again guys, I'll let you know what I find.

Found it!
When the previous owner put the 4" Rancho lift kit in they let one of the axle Ubolts rub up against the spring pack, I corrected that and got the spring plate straight with no contact on the spring pack from the Ubolts, and now the noise is gone.
I love it when a fix involves no $$$!
