FLEXPLATE
« on: October 21, 2007, 09:59:13 pm »
I know this is a dumb question but I wanted to make for sure. When installing my flex plate, do the raised bumps with bolt holes on the flex plate face towards the torque converter? I currently have my flexplate installed and torqued with the bumps on the flexplate facing the torque converter. With the tranny bolted up and the torque converter properly indexed on the tranny, the gap between the flexplate and torque converter nubs is about 3/16". I know this is the maximum, but the torque converter does not go any closer than this, i.e. it is seated onto the crankshaft completly. The flexplate easily "sucks" up to the torque converter. I just don't want to cause any pump damage. Anyone who knows how these go please help. Thanks.

Also I've included a picture the flexplate just for clarification. The raised bumps you see with holes in them are facing the torque converter currently.

The flexplate goes like you have it, bumps out.  you should be able to pull the converter to meet it and bolt it up.

did you have a manual transmission in there? Did you remove the pilot bearing if so?

Yes I had a manual transmission and I forgot to remove the pilot bearing. This is why the torque converter does slide forward towards the flexplate because the knob on the torque converter is hitting the pilot bearing.

If the pilot is still in there you got to remove it.

Well I got the old tranny out today and "hydrauliced" the pilot out. That was very fun let me tell you. It took about 45 minutes but I got the tranny back in all in about 2 1/2 hours. It was more of an annoying set back but anyways thanks you guys for helping me. This is my first time fidgeting with automatics but I knew something wasn't right there. Tomorrow I can actually post some pics of the tranny all bolted up in the project section.
