No third gear after seals
« on: November 02, 2007, 07:06:21 pm »
84 Siverado should be a 305 (by vin) was told it had a 307?
turbo 350 trans

My turbo 350 was leaking fluid all over and the shifts were slow and sloppy but I had all the gears. I took it to a local good ol' boy shop and he said all the seals needed to be replaced. Fine, I figured that. He called back later to tell me that the gasket on the pan also need to be replaced. OK. After changing the gasket he called and said that he found a lot of metal in the pan and that it might not shift well or at all. Whatever, it's just a project truck after all. I drive it home $560 later and sure enough no third gear. As I said before, it did shift before I took it in, just not very well. Now at 45 mph, the truck feels like it going to blow its winding so high.

Is there a linkage or something I should look for or did I just get taken?

Exactly what "seals" did he replace? Why would he chenge the pan gasket and not the filter? You paid $560 to get seal replaced on your trans and now it doesn't shift? Yes you got hosed. What did the fluid look like before he worked on it?

Wow, sorry to say but you got shafted hardcore..$560 should pay for a complete rebuild for a th350, 600 installed, and with a new converter...

Yeah, I kind of figured I was getting hosed. Its just that it started out small. Change a few seals (not sure what all, not to familiar with the inner workings of the tranny). Twenty dollars or so for the seals. Labor was $269 for remove and reinstall. Even if I brought him a new tranny it would have been the same. This mechanic sent out for the tranny work. The other shop kept coming up with more things to do and they were the ones that said it might not shift right after all the seals and gaskets were replaced. Everything the tranny shop did added up to about $200.

The fluid that leaked out looked pretty clear red. I just don't understand why after just changing seals and gaskets (and sensors?) too, now it won't shift into third. It did before. That why I was thinking about a linkage or something.

There aren't many seals that would cause an external leak. You have input and output shaft seals, pan gasket, Dipstick seal, front pump, shift shaft, speedo gear and the extension housing. If they had the trans out and were changing everything why not just rebuild it? Does it slip in 3rd gear or just not go into 3rd gear? If it's just not upshifting I would check the tv cable adjustment. If ok check the governer.

No, it never goes into third. It just gets to second and stays there. The faster I go, the more RPMs until I feel the truck is going to explode. How would I check the TV cable and the governor adjustment?

The TV cable is connected to the carb linkage.

The governor will require you to pop the governor cover off and remove the governor. Make sure the gear isn't apple cored.

what does the governor on the trans do? does that determine where it will shift at?
