Oldsmobile Parts in a Chevy?
« on: November 03, 2007, 09:56:55 pm »
I think Drivetrain is where this goes since it controls the drivetrain. I was wondering, I have a factory 3 Spd Hurst Shifter from an Olds 442, I was wondering if this will be able to be fit into my chevy and made to work with my TH350? If so, How would it be done. I did a search but didn't find much. Is this typically not done or just not talked about? Is there a site or a place somewhere that could explain it or walk me throuhg it, or even just a few pictures of  how a prper floor shift setup should look. Then I can go from there. I like to think that I am pretty mechanically inclined, so just anything to tell me how to start it or anything. Thanks for any help/advice/info guys.

You might be able to get an auto floor shifter and use your Hurst shifter rod and handle with it...but I don't think you can adapt a standard shifter to work on an auto tranny.

the hurst shifter is off of a TH350 with the BOP bolt pattern, and I want to use it on my Trucks Chevy TH350, but I need to know how hard it is to convert it from colum shift to floor shift, and if the hurst ratchet shifter will work on the Chevy TH350 or if it is a different set-up?

Thanks,
Dan

An auto shifter is either cable or linkage operated. It doesn't matter what the bell housing bolt pattern is. Most column shifters are linkage, and almost all except cheapola after market shifters are cable operated. Mount the sifter to the floor, cut an oval hole for the cable to go through, mount your cable bracket to the pan bolt, and hook it up.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

You can mount it on the floor however the truck ratchet shifters sit higher up so you don't have to lay down to shift while driving  :D If you really want a ratchet shifter I would suggest getting the truck shifter. But if you want to set it up, just diconnect the linkage from the column's shift tube. Cut the hole in your floor, run the cable down and once you have it positioned adjust the cable so the linkage works correctly. Personally I prefer the lack of interference and ease of the column shift. But find your model # and then get the installation instructions here http://www.hurst-shifters.com/automatic-shifters.asp

okay. I figured it wasn't that hard to do. I was going to use the oldsmobile shifter cause I had it laying around, but maybe the Hurst OEM shifter isn't what I should put in a truck. I will have to make it longer somehow, so I might as well look into getting a truck style floor shifter instead. Thanks guys.
