high rev motor
« on: December 12, 2007, 11:34:22 pm »
ok i read thru almost all the posts and still cant find the answer to my question so here it goes... i currently have an 85 scottsdale with 8" lift, 35x12.5x15, built 12 bolt rear with chromoly hardened shafts and locker, bulletproof th350 trans with 208 transfer case, dana 44 front with chromoly hardened shafts and locker, and a stock 305... so as you can tell my weak point is the trashed out 305... i wanna put a newer motor in but i figured i could build one cheaper, so i basically wanna find everything i need to build a sbc to rev to about 7000, run off pump gas, preferably fuel injected, and be pretty much bulletproof... i really dont like doin things twice so i wanna try to get it right the first time... im open to any suggestions, im kinda leanin towards a 383 stroker but whatever is best for what i want... thanks for any replies

Why do specifically say you want one to spin to 7000rpms?  For offroading I would be focussing on low end torque.  That is a lot of mass spinning around on 383's.

well i need to be able to spin the tires fast enough and with only having three gears to do it in low lock i figured the higher the rpms the faster my tires will spin in four feet of mud... i dont do alot of trail stuff mostly mud

If you plan on doing that, I would try to find something like a 327 or a 350 due to their popularity.  Then you will need a solid lift cam(I think anyway) and a well assembled top end an valve train.

The shorter the stroke the higher the engine will be able to rev. Stroking an engine isn't the answer but then again high RPM isn't what you need for you are trying to acheive anyway. Overrevving an engine is not going to produce more power or speed. You aren't going to build an engine that's making power at 7,000 RPMS without expecting to spend mad coin $$$. HI engine RPM's do not equal spinning tires fast. Thin of the engine as your powerplant. The ability to spin your tires comes from torque multiplication through gear reduction. So if you want a lot of break away tire frying action you need a good gear reduction not a high reving engine. If you are looking for high output speed an overdrive transmission is what you should be looking to build, a good final drive ratio and engine that produces a decent amount of torque.

I agree.  If the truck is going to be in 4 feet of mud, a nice set of 4.88 or 5.38 gears and a low gear trans with overdrive would be just outstanding.  However, you won't be doing any street driving with those gears.  So, it will be a bit of a compromise.

so what would be the best idea to put a motor together because regardless the motor is crap it leaks, ticks, hard to start, hard to keep running? what about a newer 5.3 and tranny... but then can i put my t case on and still have my lower gears, plus all the computer stuff... j/w what i should do... i know enough to fabricate parts to get it to fit and i can put parts together but im not sure what parts to buy... just lookin for the best solution... thanks guys

That all depends on your budget. Do you want a carburetted system or EFI? What size tires are you running? What's the main purpose of this vehicle? What gear ratio do you have now? What is your existing transfercase?

i kinda want to go with fuel injected whether it be tbi or port, im goin to end up with 36x12.5x15 tsl's the only thing i do in this truck is drive 10 minutes back and forth to work... and bury it in the mud and hit the badlands on the weekends, i have 4.56 gears and a 208 transfer case... im not really worried about fuel efficiency as much as i am reliability and i dont necessarily want a $20,000 motor but i can spend what i need to do it right... im thinkin between 300-400 horse.... everything i already have in the truck is near indestructable... but the motor... thanks guys... chris

If you are going small block build a strong port fuel injected 383 and you can put a good 700R4 behind it. Or you can step into the world of Big Blocks which will cost quite a bit more to build but bring you to a new level of power and back it with a nice 4L80E  ;D
