Engine Oil additives...do they help?
« on: December 16, 2007, 01:29:01 pm »
I have an 85 K10 SWB with 305(H) and TH350, it's got 148591.2 miles on it right now and she needs an oil change, in the past with higher milage cars i've always used Castrol's GTX high milage oil, my plan is to use that again in this truck. However, I think this truck is lacking some of the power that it is supposed to have, and I've known people who have used this Engine Restore stuff before. My question is does that stuff really do what it says it will. Restore Compression from Blow-by, Restore lost HP, Extend engine life..does it really do any of that?

There are additives that can help with sludge problems or stuck rings etc but don't have too high expectations. GM has an additive called EOS (Engine Oil Suppliment) which puts back in some of the additives that have been omitted from newer oils for older engines that benefit from such oils. If your engine is lacking power I wouldn't focus on the lubrication or sealing of the engine first unless it's a puffer and fouling plugs. Start with the basics -tune up etc

I concurr. I don't know about engine restore, but marvel mystery oil and lucas additives are the root of all evil when added to good multigrade oil.

IMO, high mileage oils are wasted money. Good ole ordinary Castrol GTX 10w30/10w40 is my top choice for conventional oil, regardless of mileage. Synthetics are a different and long winded story.

castol oil is the only oil you need. there is nothing you can pour into an engine to make it new. if the engine is tierd the only thing that will make it like new is a rebuild or replacement.

I bought the last bottle of GM EOS avaliable in Shreveport. Went to three different dealerships to find it. After it was mentioned here by Vile, I looked the stuff up, aparently the stuff has all sorts of minerals, and things like anti-foaming agents, anti-wear agent, anti-oxidents in it, even mopar guys are using this stuff in their cars. After I looked up the VOA of the GM EOS, I was curious about what the Castrol oil had in it, it has almost nothing but a sh*t load of carbon in it...I never realized the true science behind oils and the content of them.

Yep - most likely cause for my abnormal cam lobe destruction and the reason I upgraded all of my bearings. I also went roller cam too this time too... The GM dealer I used to work at wasn't selling it at all so the parts manager gave me about 2 cases of it.
