sometimes i feel i geek out on these trucks too much...
« on: January 10, 2008, 09:56:01 pm »
last night the wife and I decided to go out to eat (took the van) and stopped by WallyWorld for fuel first...as we're pulling in i see this decent looking '87 C10 Silverado LWB sitting at the pump.  i was drooling over it while i was pumping gas and as i'm getting done the owner comes over and asks if i had jumper cables (i would have had we not been in the van...the van usually has some but she loaned 'em out to her brother...the F*rd driver!)...i said "sorry, no i don't...hey, nice '87!"  he looks astonished and says "THANKS!  how did you know it was an '87?!"  "i saw the Fuel Injection badge on the tailgate"... ::)

maybe i need to get a hobby...lol

You have a hobby, Chevy trucks!!!
I am the same way, I can tell year to year by trim, grill, or badges, etc.
My friends always ask how do you know? I tell them its a C K thing, & they will never understand!!

Yeah, I get a kick out  of someone that don't know the difference between C & K like at a parts store were they always seem to have "the most knowledgeable staff" or that don't know the difference between 1/2 ton 3/4 ton or ton by the numbers, and yeah my wife is always yelling at me to keep my eyes on the road and I reply but honey did you see that truck.

yea man, Vato Zone is the worst.  closely followed by Checker/Schucks/Kragen.  Advance, Pep Boys and O'Reilly's seem to be the better ones...none of them are very good though...

but yea, i did the same trick a while back, when i worked as a water well pump technician.  we were at a customer's house (a very well-off customer) and he had a NICE C10 that had been restored in his driveway.  we got to talking and i started off by sayin "nice '81".  he, just like the last guy, was astonished...the truck had no trim/badges on it...how did you know it was an '81...lucky guess?

"no sir, it is a single-tank truck, in 1982 GM relocated the primary tank to the driver's side, so i guessed that either you have a 1973-1981 bed on your truck or it's a factory 1981."  we got to talkin, man he had a lot of time/money into that truck...but he was a true enthusiast, he REBUILT that truck himself.  paint, engine, tranny, EVERYTHING.

BTW, speaking of us crazy C/K diehards...does anyone else get angry when someone calls a GMC a Chevy or a GMC a C10 or a Chevy a C1500?  or better yet, a 4wd a C-series?  heck, i get downright anal with the GMC's...from 1973-1980 they were C/K-15/25/35 and in 1981 they changed to the C/K-1500/2500/3500...my God i need a life!

Around here, any 73-87 GM truck is a "chevy truck" and its either "four wheel drive or two wheel drive" and its "half ton, three-quarter ton, or one ton"..if you go into the GOOD parts store, and ask for a part for an 83 c10, they'll look at you funny for a second, then find exactly what you needed. So, none of the above bothers me.  ;D

The parts stores as far as competency here, are in order: Local store Gleason(Napa sign next to the Gleason sign, napa sign over the door, same old people inside), another local store Heinz I think its called..its a speed shop with OUTRAGEOUS prices, then autozone, then o'reilly's..The only time AZ and o'reilly's switch as far as competency, is in the respective paint sections..AZ has a little rattle can section, o'reilly's has a real paint shop thats run by a guy that used to have a body shop in town before his arthritis in his hands got too bad to do the work

I love it when you tell them year K 30 and you need front brake pads. They ask front or rear? The next question is that 4 wheel drive? Then when I ask for the hardware to hold the caliper on they insist there is two bolts that go through the backing plate, & caliper and thread into the backing plate. I make them show me the screen and I point out the correct parts they say " oh that must be some kind of odd ball brake set up ".
Another good one is " I need a set of wiper blades, or a head light bulb for an 86 K 2500 ". Fist they ask what motor does it have? Then they ask if its 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive? Now I know their computer needs this info to move onto the next screen, but give me a break! Just pick one it not like it matters what the motor is for a wiper blade. After answering them I usually add in what color it is! They answer " that doesn't matter " all serious. No kidding captain obvious!

You guys have never had it soooo good! You have loadsa shops/stores etc and can usually get what u need quickly. I've just ordered a hood and l/h fender for my truck and the shipping costs were more than the parts themselves! And I have to wait 2-3 weeks for them! Outrageous!

Now I need a turn signal switch. I found a website over there selling them for less than $40-00. In the UK I'm having to pay roughly $95-00 AND $30-00 to have it posted 70 miles!

I sure hope the truck looks good and all works when its done and with fuel @ $2-20 a litre I wont be going too far!

Lastly my truck is a '78 with bits from '73 & '80 & '83!!  I blame your airforce mechanics 'cos they maintained it!!

cheers

Blazin, I like the color line I think I'll use it if you don't mind. Kinda like asking for a water pump for a truck w/350 and they ask if is 2 or 4 wheel drive.

I know exactly what you mean.

I got in an argument with one of my friend's mom's boyfriend bought a "Scottsdale" and we had a ten minute argument on how it was a K10 but she was positive the truck was a Chevy Scottsdale.

or when people call a K10 a C10 then they don't understand the difference.

then the people who deny that its a K10/C10 just because it doesnt have a badge that says so.

lmao, yea, i've always hated when they ask for all this info not even related to what part you are asking for.  oh, you want that soda?  what kind of car do you drive?  motor?  ring size?  house payment amount?
