Buying a carb?

what carb would i buy to replace a carter quadrajet on a 400 cid 4 wheel drive?  i am looking for a combination of power and efficiency. 

edit: sorry, its a 1976 chevy original motor as far as i know.  not sure what kind of manifold it has (how would i check it?)  current carb is a carter quadrajet.

what year is your truck? What intake manifold do you have? Do you have a rochester quadrajet? What's wrong with your carb?

Well im sure ur going to here Quadrajet alot...But im a holley guy myself....
But i must admit the q-jet combines power with efficiency while holley is more about the performance

Edelbrock puts out the the Carter/Weber AFB series carbs which are decently priced and easily tuneable. They've proven their worthiness in many dyno test results over Holley without as many problems. Personally I had a Dominator on my 454 and tuned and tuned and tuned that carburetor with little consistency so I opted for an 800 Edelbrock. I had it tuned and dialed in so easily I decided to eBay the dominator. I have an Edelbrock Q-jet that I scored for free on my 86 K20 and it's pretty decent. So I must say the AFB style carbs are the easiest most user friendly carbs if you're not the best tuner but even so they perform quite well.

Your best off getting a Rochester, avoid square bore carbs. and I think as long as the rest of the engine is stock, it will be happy with 600-650cfm.

yep, VZ is one fart smucker...we are lucky to have him around.  now that i've made his head three times bigger, onto the comment i was gonna make...for off-roading, as much as it ticks off most QJet haters...the good 'ol Quadrajet is about the best carb you are gonna find.  it is just really well-mannered off road when it's in good shape.
