WHAT SIZE TIRE TO BUY?
« on: January 23, 2008, 11:49:08 am »
I have an 87 GMC 2WD.  At this time I have a set of 235/75 15s mounted on the stock rims.  I would like to know what is the largest size tire I could put on these rims.
Thanks a bunch!
Any pictures would be very appreciated.
P.S.  If someone has a set of nice rims/tires for sale that would fit this truck pls. let me know.

where are you located and what do you mean by largest? Taller or wider?

Michigan...this being a 2wd truck I'd like to put a tire that will help me thur the winters and such.
I would like to put some AT or M+S tires.  something like the BF Goodrich All terrains.
I know 31 10.5 15s would do it but can I go wider?

You're pushing it with 31x10.5R15. i will tell you that those tires on a 2WD will beat the crap out of the front end. taller tires don't equate to better traction.

Well I'd like a taller tire to help with the ground clearance.  That's why I wanted 31 10.5s...Any suggestions?
Thanks a ton!

You won't get a taller tire than 31's under a stock 1/2T 4x2 without rubbing..

taller tires will definitely help. i have 235/75/16s on my 86 3/4 ton 2wd which measure out to 31" and those are stock size i dont think clearance should be an issue on a 1/2 ton. skinnier tires will give you the best traction i wouldnt go wider then 235

When comparing two equally aggressive treads, like Wild Country RVT, I've had somwhat better luck with snow traction with a slightly wider tire. Could have been the nature of the tire, but 31x10.50 wild country RVTs did better in snow on my '84 than the 225/75/r15 of the same tire does on it now, both mounted on the same 8" wide rims.
