« on: January 25, 2008, 10:38:15 pm »
bet most of ya'll haven't even seen one rust here. but it's on the outside of the truck, right under the back glass under the weatherstripping. theres a few little spots bubbling up under the paint. all i need to know is how can you get the back glass out. and can you offer any tips on how to fix it. btw it's an 87 1/2 ton 2wd short bed Silverado.

I cut mine out with a razor knife.  I plan on replacing the gasket with a new one when I have it reinstalled.  I fixed some spots on my front glass frame by using a air die grinder and sanding the rust away.  I was lucky, it wasn't rusted all the way through.

The weather stripping should have a locking strip if you pull it out you can push the glass, easy to start the window out or if you can get to the rust by moving the weatherstrip out of the way without taking the glass out you can run a nylon cord or small rope in between the stripping and the cab to get access to it.

baseball bat, sledge hammer, or a trim stick, or mechanics wire, or rope. Either way get it warm and use some glass cleaner to lube up the seal

87swb, The back glass comes out fairly easy. Take a fiber stick, plastic putty knife, ect. Run around the inside & outside of the rubber where it meets the body to "break loose the seal" . Start in one of the lower corners, roll up 3" or 4" of the lip on the inside on the bottom (if you can get a buddy to help it can be a little easier) & roll up 3" or 4" going up one side, push firmly, but not like a gorilla & work along the bottom, side, bottom, side, getting the inside lip to slide over the metal, once you have the one side loose to the top your as good as done. Now putting it back in, the easiest way is with a small rope or cord, wrap it around the rubber (down in the groove where the metal will go) overlapping the ends several inches, do the overlap on the bottom of the window, apply some dish soap in the groove over the rope. Again it's best with a friend, set the bottom on the pinchweld, have a friend push down & slightly in, start pulling the rope out toward you going around the window from the inside, down & in, down & in, once you've cleared the top corners your all set. Lightly bang on the glass around the edge to fully seat it. That's all, Once you do one you will think "boy that was easy". Good Luck, Lorne

I use a pry bar with a broad end. I push the rubber from the inside out up and over the pinch weld. I go along the bottom and up both sides part way. The I go to the outside and pull out, &down on the glass, & the rubber.

There won't be a locking strip in the back glass.  Just pry one corner on the inside rubber down and push, it will come out with some pressure.  I usually have someone helping me so it want fall out...

well so much for that, i just shattered the thing trying to get it out. i was prying on the bottom left corner and finally it just shattered. you have to put pressure on it but what's to stop that glass from shattering when you got your hands all over it. let that happen and it'll be nasty. i guess i'll take it to get a solid back glass in it instead of that sliding one but i still got to repair the rust and i'm sure the glass shop won't do that >:( :( :'(

If you want the solid back glass, disregard this, but if you want the sliding back glass, go check the junk yards..you can usually snag a sliding back glass for like $20..many will have one they've already removed.

Any metal body truck will rust in any of the salt states. Rust free '73-87 trucks in salt states are very rare.

The best way to fix those holes is probably going to be brazing or lead.

For reference I don't pry on the glass.  I just lip the gasket over on the bottom or top corner and put pressure on the glass while I roll the gasket out.  I have the original slider that came out of my 87 that I will sell for $35 + shipping, if you want it...

Just curious not trying to start anything by any means but I have an 85 that has the chrome locking strip in a sliding back glass I didn't mean to mislead by saying to remove it but when he stated it was a siverado I assumed it would have one. My bad.
