Shift kits, whats the pro's and cons

Can anybody enlighten me on the mysteries of shift kits?  I have a th350, with a mild built 400 sbc, K10 1975. Are there some better than others? Do they harm the transmission?  I've done a post search but it was not much help on the subject.  Any information would be appreciated.

A kit that goes in the transmission, it will not post right the word stuff keeps appearing.  I think someone is hijacking us

Oh a (edit)* SHIFT kit? lol There are many "kits" but it depends what you want it to do before you can determine exactly what's right for you. Thanks Vile, are they hard to put in? and something like that going to bark at every shift?

Not hard at all but if you are clumsy be careful. You need patience and attention to detail. You'll need some snap ring pliers and some trans gel or vaseline works well. Other than that the tools are pretty basic.
