best way to keep engine timed when pulling off the intake?

what do i need to know and do to keep my engine timed correctly when pulling the intake off to replace the gaskets?

Pull the distributor cap off and make a reference of the rotor to the distributor base. Then put a witness mark (scribe a line)on the distributor base to the intake manifold. Just make sure you don't rotate the eninge until you put the distributor back in.
