Got a set of 487x heads that need redone, have questions
« on: February 15, 2008, 03:08:37 pm »
I have a set of 1972 487X small block heads off of a running engine(crappy 305) that definetely need rebuilt.  The exhaust valves are sunk between 1/16" and 1/8" on 3 valves on one head.  I assume from 1972 that we are talking about seats for leaded fuel and I know they werent using additive to compensate.  Can these heads be fixed or did thay most likely break from the valves pulling up like that?  My 327 project is using 193 heads as of now, but I would like to put these on in the future if possible.

The 487X heads are better than the 487 heads but aren't really worth pumping a lot of dough into. 76cc chambers and probably 1.94 valves. You will probably have to replace all of the seats along with the guides. I'm sure you will need a set of valves and probably springs (even so if they don't match your cam specs). You'll have to do quite a bit of porting to make them performance worthy heads. If you can't do the work yourself add in the cost of labor and then admire your very expensive low performance heads. So basically get a chain and bolt it to the heads and put them in your boat so you can anchor it down good  ;)

Well, actually they are 2.02/1.60 valves but point well taken just the same.  Going to see what all I can find tomorrow at the local bone yard.  Maybe the 70Chevelle 4 door will have something decent, but that is right back to the seats again.

You can buy a good set of heads for the price of having a set rebuilt in many cases, and you'll get better flow, screw in studs, guide plates and everything new. No worry about any screw ups at the machine shop on less than par heads. Its worth the piece of mind at minimum.
