I found them at a gm dealer for 575, dover wanted 620. I think summit is around 600 for a set also. I thought someone might know if someone was selling them cheaper.

Dover wanted $620? Did you call them or look up list price? Did you look on ebay?

Why do you want new over reman? If you want brand new they're a GM head so you'll have to get them from GM

Scoggin Dickey's got em for $275.75 each here if you want them new.  If you know a good machine shop in your area, you could always find a set at a salvage yard and them have the valve guides machined (for lift beyond .450") and have the press-in rocker studs removed in favor of screw-in (only necessary for high-performance apps).  Or Scoggin Dickey sells modified sets here.

I am wanting new because I won't know who did the work on the heads. I know the chances of getting a defected set are slim but if you had my luck you would understand.

As an alternative to those, there are two places that sell new Dart Iron Eagle S/S heads fully assembled for $649. These are with 1.94/1.50 valves (same as Vortecs), 165cc intake runner (180 avail., even though the 165 measures out to 178cc) and 72cc combustion chamber (64cc available). They come assembled with 3/8" ARP studs and have .525" max lift springs installed. So no machine work required if you want to install a decent cam. I bought these from Aerohead racing late last year. $100 extra for shipping but Competition Products has the same heads for only $20 handling charge. That's a heck of a deal for a head that performs all the same as a Vortec and can accommodate larger cams with no extra money spent on machine work. Once you have them modified, they'll cost the same or more as the Darts.

Read this article. I found it excellent and swayed me to buy the Darts over the Vortecs I was researching. Oh, plus you don't have to buy a Vortec-specific intake manifold which is a little pricer than a regular SBC intake.

The mad craze over Vortec heads is you can score a set for close to nothing, fix them up and have one of the best performing CHEAP GM heads ever made and they're readily available. I personally would never buy these heads brand new then buy a special intake to match unless I scored a set dirt cheap or free (like I did). If you're gonna spend $600 + on new heads I would get some real good performance heads, that's kinda why I ? whyhe wanted new instead of recon

I have a buddy that bought a set a couple years ago from a GM dealer in FL for $500 to his door. A buddy put these heads on pretty much a stock 350 with a mild cam, intake, and carb and I liked how it performed. I was just thinking if I could find a deal close to that why buy used one when I could spend a 100 bucks more for new and still be 200 bucks cheaper than other perfomance heads. I am wanting something that can be used as a DD and make its power on the lower end for towing. This is going in a 86 3/4 ton 4x4 with the original motor, so I am going to buy an intake and carb no matter what heads I go with.
