3rd and 4th gen camaros had air dams at the bottom of the car to direct air to the radiator, many v8 s10s do have overheating issues.

I would definitely advise against blocking off the grille. It's not only your radiator you are passing air through. Air passes through the radiator but doesn't stop there does it? Most of the air should pass underneath the vehicle and most manufacturers claim better aerodynamics with the tailgate up. Adding a toneau cover is also adding weight.
