box sides or new shortbox?
« on: March 07, 2008, 04:21:37 pm »
i'm looking at restoring my 84 shortbox, and have found all the necessary parts in the online catalog to redo the cab and front sections which is fantastic, but i was wondering, is there any chance of finding an entire truck box or at least box sides? i'm looking to do as little welding as possible, and my current box is pretty mangled, i would have to buy every piece off the catalog and weld in everything, it would be a whole lot easier to just buy an all new box. i live in alberta, canada, but just knowing that the possibilty of it being available would be nice to know. thanks, andrew.

I dont know about canada but here in the u.s. there are places that sell rust free original beds. I can't post any links though, I don't know if they are competitors to this site.

I bought new bedsides from a competitor before I started coming to this site and they were pretty awful, maybe I just got some bad ones? but that is my experience.

cheapest way out will be a used bed. If you want new sides several companies sell them like   or classicparts. Chris doesn't sell the whole bedside here last I looked...

I don't sell bedsides, or used beds, post away.  You don't have to be that gun shy...
rustfreeparts or something like that has good used stuff...

I grew up in those parts (Lloydminster) and these trucks should be very very very plentiful. Although the downside is most of them would be rusted from the prairie winters. Finding a good (maybe a little surface rust for example) bed shouldn't be impossible though. Keep an eye in the AutoTrader and Bargain Finder sites, or craigslist for a big city near your area.

i was looking in the bargain finder this week and there is a short box stepside for sale right now actually. I live just outside of edmonton so im in the same region as you. The ad says the box is in excellent shape and it also says it is rust free.
check out www.buysell.com and its in the edmonton region

ya i live just outside edmonton also, anyway, i have been watching trader.ca and buysell, but i have not seen the ad you are refering to. what year was it under? i would prefer not to buy a whole nother truck, but it could be used for parts i suppose. the biggest issue is i really have no place to store it. the one i have right now is being stored at the shop i work at as it is. are you aware of any wreckers near or in edmonton that carry that kind of stuff? thanks again all who responded.

i looked around forever for a box for my truck and there was no one thats really dealing with these trucks anymore, they all went to the newer styles. The add is in the auto parts and accessories section and its under the dom. truck/van parts and accessories. I just looked again and the box is still listed.

Chris, Just curious, how come you don't sell complete sides? I see you have a good selection of stuff & just wondered. Thanks, Lorne

My supplier stopped providing them because people kept returning them because a 6ft long piece of metal shipped over the country arrived that had a ding in it, OR they bolted it up and it required fitting, so they sent them back.  They are supposed to start supplying them again, but right now they don't keep them in stock, so I don't order them.

I do sell 67-72 bedsides though (SWB) and they keep those in stock..

I also saw two stepside beds on Vancouver craigslist for $400.
