door glass
« on: March 14, 2008, 11:55:00 pm »
I'm going to change my door glass on both sides since I'm also going to change the Power window motors so my question is how do I go about getting the old window out of the track?

Ahh...its pretty easy once you do it. You need to start by taking the window crank off...then the door panel. With the window rolled down all the way, unscrew the 3 screws on the top of the door...above the vent window. Follow that track down the door and under the crank there should be 1 bolt. Once those are removed you can wiggle the vent window out...it takes a second but you can figure out how to get it.

When the vent window is removed, roll the window back up all the way (while pulling it lightly to the outside of the window frame...so its off track) Once the window is rolled all the way up, you just slide it off the rollers. I started by sliding the one on the outside off first...then tilting the window slightly and got the inside roller off. Hope this helps...i did the 4 windows on my burb yesterday and today.

You don't need to remove your vent window to replace the side glass.
Once your door panel is off you will see four 7/16 headed bolts that hold your window regulator to the inside of the door. You will also see a 7/16 head bolt down low toward the back. This holds the bottom of the back track in. Remove it to give the glass some room to move back and forth. Remove the regulator bolts too. Then when you roll the window up or down you can slide the roller out of the door track, & the  two rollers out of the window track, one at the end and the other in the middle of the track there is a spot to pop the roller out. Then turn your window cockeyed and slide it up and out. I also drop the inside door handle down out of the way. Just makes it easier to reach in there, you don't have top undo the linkage.

If I don't remove the vent window, where do I have the window, in the up or down position, to start taking this out.   Also when I get the glass out, what's the best way to seperate the glass from the track?  I've had all this out about 5 years ago when I put new doors on, but can't remember exactly how I did it.

Unbolt the track for the bottom of the vent window but leave it in. Unbolt the regulator and just actuate it up and down to the point where you can remove the regulator from the glass. Then just slide the glass out of the track.

Just finished.  Replaced the window motor, glass, outer door handle and while I was at it I changed my mirrors.  Just wanted to say thanks for answering my questions, as stupid as they might sound, and not costing me a finger or two, that's something I wouldn't have thought of.  The difference is night and day with the new motor and the old motor, should have done this 15 years ago.  Thanks again!

just took the truck outside for the first time since changing the glass and I noticed the drivers side window is a bit too far forward and leaning out a bit at the top.  Wondering if there are any adjustments that can be made or do I have to remove the window track and start over?

sorry to thread steal here, but my question is related. can a window that came from a power setup be used in a crank set up? just the window itself?
