Is there a reason? Avatars are cool and help identify individuals on messageboards don't you think?

In order to get avatars (and other message board goodies), Chris would have to switch formats (if that's what it is called)...and that isn't cheap.

Chris has hinted of it, but if we all want this, we all would need to chip in financially I would assume. Something I am willing to do.
