Did GM ever make??
« on: March 26, 2008, 11:32:18 pm »
I'm putting together an 87' GMC 2x4 for my daughter so I can have my Eldorado back. This has a nice lower miles 350 PFI and automatic. I've pondered pulling out the 350 and putting in an older 250 inline 6. We had a couple of these and a 292 in different trucks and cars over the years. The 250s were cheap to run and tough as nails. The 292 was tough on gas but strong. I'd like to know if GM ever made a fuel injected inline 6 like the 250 or did they just go to the pig V-6 2.8 and 4.3s? I'm not real fond of carburators anymore and V-6 engines don't pack the punch of an inline in my opinion.
Thanks

Your 87 could have had a factory 4.3 v6, I do not believe an inline 6 was offered for this year.

You have a port fuel injected 350 now or is it TBI?

TBI unless it was a Mule at some point in it's life....  Aside from a few Test Mules here and there, Carb and TBI was the only setups available with these Bodystyles.... Granted it could also be a conversion from an Outside Aftermarket Vendor, but if it is a PFI, then it was likely converted by this/the previous owner.....

in an '87 you only had one option for a 350...TBI.  the only 6 popper you could get after 1984 was the 4.3 V6, it was introduced in 1985 with a 4bbl carb, it too got TBI in '87.  yes, GM did make a fuel injected 250 I-6...for the Mexican market.  there was a thread about it (with pics) on FSC.com, but i can't find it.  anyhow, i doubt you'll be able to get one.  you can run a 250, you will just be taking a leap back.  the truck is the same as the older ones, so you can bolt it in and you could most likely even make the TBI work on it if you could get an intake that would accept the TB.  heck, i've seen 'em run 4bbl carbs on the 250 and the TB is kinda like that.  you would just have to install the proper sensors in the block and get a computer PROM that could run it and you could have your very own TBI 250.  might be kinda cool.

This 350 is a TBI. I suppose it would likely last another 100,000 miles with proper servicing. I'm just curiously seeking options. I've turned #1 daughter down on her requests of other engines from my "private stock". She's a "launch junkie" hence the GMC truck taking the place of the Cadillac Eldorado. I make her buy her own gas and tires.
Thanks for the responses.
