Okay guys - your starter question for ten marks!!

Fuel guage moves when ignition turned on but stays there even when ignition then turned off. The three prongs- top left hot with ignition. bottom one does nothing- top right shows power when I put a test light to it. Does this mean a bad ground somewhere or is it likely to be the circuit on the back?

I'm hoping this is the last wiring issue, I've managed to resolve all the other problems caused by the previous owner. Even found four wires, bare ends just twisted together!! And eliminated the "scotch" blocks where they just clip on existing wire and take a feed from there.

OOOh while I think of it, under the steering column there's a small 2" box with what looks like a speaker grill! has pink wires and one white with black stripe. Could someone tell me what it is?

Are you talking about the chime module? Need to see pix.

Take the fuel gauge sending unit wire off of the tank sender. Key on engine off it should read past full. If you ground that wire it should read E. let us know what happens.

ok here goes!! Took sender wire apart at joiner and with key on (no engine) went well past full. If I ground it out it goes well past "E"     what next?

What does the chime box do? Is it a silly noise if lights left on etc?

Yeah a chime module makes an obnoxious tone if you leave the key in the ignition.

So you know the wire to the gauge has continuity. this doesn't necessarily mean it's good if it has high resistance then that will through off your gauge accuracy. You can ohm the wire from the sender to the gauge if you have it all apart. But if the needle on the gauge responds corectly The most likely cause is the sending unit in the tank

Cheers Vile, I've been waiting for a reply so I can go to bed! Its 11-15pm here lol and up at 6am!!

I had a feeling you might say the sender  I might check the ground off the sender(if it has one!) just to make sure- dunno if it'd make any difference!

I can live with the gauge reading incorrectly just the gauage goes up but doesn't fall when turned off.

How easy are they to get to or is it drop the whole tank out?

As for the "chime" I'll leave it discon- the truck key is on the same as the house

The sender is grounded at the tank and should have an auxiliary ground. to drop the tank or remove the bed is the only way to get to the sender... You could alwyas take a known good sender and ground the body with a jumper wire then actuate the float and observe the gauge.

mmmm tank out- triffic   looks like a weekend job for me. Just when I thought I was getting there. What do ya reckon the chances of moving the float manually as its been sat for a couple of years. I know it still means dropping it but I have to wait weeks for parts over here!!

I have trouble cos I'm outside the US. I'd love to buy a 2nd hand tailgate and r/hand fender but costs loads. I got a new hood and l/h fender and it was over $700 total then a hire van to get it from shippers!!
I have a guy in California that can arrange shipping but wouldn't know where to start looking for parts! I need silly small things like a single speedo cable not one that runs thru the cruise box, interior bits etc etc blah blah but struggling 

Thats why I really appreciate you guys with the knowledge helping out  if I could work out how to pay the subscription I would!!

Right - tank out and sender out. More crap wiring etc etc blah blah. Fuel guage now responds to sender and shows full and empty when moved       the only question now is how do I get the guage to show empty when the keys are taken out?

The guage basically stays where it was when the key is out, it does not go to E. Mine doesn't.

Gauge doesn't zero out when the key is off.
