Brakes

O.K. fellas. On my '74 Chevy pickup, if I apply the brakes when it's wet out the whole rearend locks up. If I apply them just a little harder than usual on dry ground they lock up. How do I fix this?

Inspect the rear brakes. Make sure the primary shoe is on the front on each side. Make sure both shoes sit securely on the anchor pin. If not, back off on the parking brake cable or your brake cable is sticking. If the shoes are contaminated with gear oil etc they will also lock up. Check the condition of the linings, the drums, and the hardware. Peak behind the boots on the wheel cylinders and check for leaks.

In addition also check to see the drums are true. I've had this problem several times turn out to be the drums were egg shaped. Not enough to feel it but enough to make the brakes grab and lock.

some "transit" size van trucks have a load sensing bias valve. Do "our" trucks have them? If so it could stuck as if under load?

Bitzer, the 3/4T up trucks could have the valve on them.  They are known to go bad...
