A/C parts
« on: May 12, 2008, 12:46:34 am »
I've put the A/C box and controls from a 75 C20 into my son's 74 Stepside. The parts truck I picked up didn't have the compressor, brackets or lines. The condenser was bad, too. I picked up a later model (85-87) radial compressor with all the brackets and the hoses from the compressor but am still missing some parts. I've spent about 2 weeks searching for solutions but I have a couple of questions. Orifice tube or expansion valve? I've looked at tons of pictures and don't recall seeing expansion valves on the trucks. If that's the case, what tube does the orifice tube go into? Can I replace the evaporator core in the 75 box with an 85 model evaporator core so the hoses will hook up? Then I can buy the later model condenser and it will all hook up right? If I buy a 75 condenser I'll have to find someone to make custom hoses?

Ok, I found a post that said the trucks had an orifice tube. I think I figured out where it goes, too. Also, after looking at some catalogs, the radial compressor was available on several model years (as early as 77?). Any chance of parts from a 77 would bridge the gap from 75 to 85?

The early models used a TXV instead of an orifice tube and used the axial compressor.

The orifice tube is in the line before the evaporator. I don't think you'll have much luck with hoses and lines interchanging. Your best bet is to pick a year and system you want to use and match the parts accordingly.
