77 700r4
« on: May 23, 2008, 01:43:32 am »
Hi I've got a 77 Custom Deluxe with a 250 ci and a three on the tree. I've got a 700r4 that i'd like to put in. I'm kinda lost as to what to do.

Is it computer controlled? If so you will need to swap out a non computer controlled valve body from an early 700R4. You will need a floor shifter or an auto column from a 4 speed auto truck. If you go the column route you might need to move some of the pins around in the plugs on the column to match up with your 77 plugs. You will need a 700R4 out put shaft yoke, and shorten the drive shaft. You will need an automatic cross member, an automatic radiator for the cooler, plus an after market cooler wouldn't hurt too. Make up some trans coolant lines, a flex plate to replace your flywheel, shorter bolts as the ones from your flywheel will stick to far through the crank flange and hit the block.
I am probably forgetting something but thats the basics.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I think it's computer controlled. It's out of my wrecked 92 s-10 and I've got a B&M ratchet shifter. Can I use the fly wheel and the converter off the s-10?

All 700R4's are NOT computer controlled.  In 1993 they 4L60E came out and it was computer controlled.  If it came out of a 92, it should be the 4L60..

You can use the converter
But you need a flexplate for the 250
Flexplate off of the 4.3 won't fit

you will have to move the crossmember back about 1.5"
you will probably need another driveshaft
you will need a radiator off of an automatic truck for the trans cooler
you will have to plumb lines from the tranny to the cooler(s)
you may have to change the TV (throttle valve) cable to fit your 250
I think the V8 cable might be long enough (?)
Maybe someone here with a 250/TH350 can measure thier cable for you to compare the length to the V6/V8 length
you will need to fab a bracket for the TV cable, for the connection to the carb

yes the ratchet shifter will work

The TV cable (outer section) for a V8 700R4 is 36.5"
The 700R4 cable exits the housing approx 4" further back than a TH350
I personally do not know if that is long enough for a straight 6
I personally do not know what the length of a V6 700R4 cable is

Treney replaced his 250/6 for a 350/8- his cable was long enough
Perhaps Treney could measure it
Perhaps Layne could measure the TV cable of the V6 700R4
so that a comparison could be made between the lengths.....
