USED TIRES........YOUR THOUGHTS:
« on: May 30, 2008, 05:12:02 pm »
i've got a plethora of used tires (some hi-po) that i'm thinking of giving away/selling on "the list."

However, most of them, probably all of them are over 4 years old and i think it might be a safety hazard to sell or give them away.

Your thoughts?

I buy and sell used tires all the time. As long as they are not weather cracked they should be fine.

Back in 'ancient times' when tires were made with cotton-cord plies they used to figure tires were a blowout/accident waiting to happen when they got 5 years old, modern materials don't 'rot' that way :)
IMO as long as you've got no weather-checks or separations you will be fine, one issue I've heard of with *really* old tires is that they can lose enough of the 'volatiles' in the rubber compound to get hard as a rock and nearly as rough riding....

PT.2:

Do you trust Firestone tires?

a) before, say, 95 or whenever the ford fiasco happened?

b)after, say, 95 or whenever the ford fiasco happened?

I think that tire technology has improved alot in the past decade.  Although the tire brand makes a difference to me, in terms of quality.  I have purchased and run used BFG and Yokohama tires on my trucks in the past; mainly for off-road use.  I have a pair of used BF Goodrich tires on the rear of my beater '73 C20, those tires have lasted a LONG time.

I've bought a bunch of use tires.  on my 87, I bought 3 sets to find out what size would fit, without being stuck with them for a long time, and also for cheap.

A) Pre-Ford Fiasco, they were decent tires at best truck wise

B) Post Fiasco, Crap no matter what(Unless High Dollar Performances, but I still wouldn't trust them :o) so as Blazin suggested, Good For Burnouts ;D   Careful not to have anyone around when they shread, cause they can go flying(Also watch that they aren't going to destroy a Rim/Body Panel in the process!! :o :o :o).....

Ford contracted Firestone to make them cheap tires and then ford sets inflation recommendation at 26psi. The tires blow out and the media exploited it. I think Ford and Firestone learned their lessons... Firestone makes decent tires still.

I blame Ford for 75% of that. The ignorant SUV owners for another 15%. People were inflating their tires to what the door jamb said, not the sidewall of the tire. I have never had a problem with Firstone tires.

Cooper Tire says that tires shouldn't be kept over ten years. That's a pretty long time. Most trailering experts say to replace heavy trailer tires (campers, motorhomes)within 7 years.
