approximate painting costs?

Hi, just a question for those of you who have had their trucks re-painted.  I've got a black '81 stepside that I'm working on that I eventually want to re-paint.  I called Maaco for a rough estimate and they just told me to bring it in.    Assuming the majority of the bodywork is done, how much can I expect it to cost me?  (I assume it would be cheaper to keep it black)  Obviously I don't expect a quote right down to the dollar but a ballpark estimate would be great!

Not that its a lot of help but over here its gonna cost me £2k thats about $3800. I'll have the bed ready to slip off as I want behind the cab done properly and all the welding done.

Well I just got quotes on mine from 3 different guys and most of my body work is done. $8-$12K! Guess I shoulda stayed friends with the last guy! lol Another buddy of mine has a body shop so I'll be doing my paint job myself this time. Maaco don't spend more than $800 bucks bc you won't like it

Ball park is tough. Depends on how much work is done or needs to be done. Do you want a 60 / 60, or a show truck? Base clear, or single stage? Enamel, or urethane?

Ummm....   It's an everyday driver, dunno about the different steps or types of paint.  It doesn't have to be sparkly but it'd be nice if it something that's at least a tiny bit shiny.

A 60 / 60 is a job that looks real good from 60' at 60 MPH. Doesn't matter if its that or better it should still shine like a new diamond. As far as keeping it black, black shows every single little imperfection. As far as most of the body work being done. Not trying to be a jerk but I have heard that line thousands of times over my life and in the long run it would have been cheaper for them if they had just left it alone and had me do the work to begin with!
Its is still difficult to even give a ball park. Single stage ( no clear coat ) Paint & materials, includes any primer for repair areas, etc. tape, paper, sand paper, etc. etc. can run between $350 to $600, maybe more.
As far as labor goes it a quickie with not much body work could run you between $500 to $1,000 or more. A nice job for a driver could be as high as $2,000.

you go a solid color, you're still looking at a min of like 2500. do not let maaco ruin that truck you'll be sorry when you have to have it repainted. the orange peel and the runs in even your basecoat will have you kicking yourself for years. make friends with someone in auto body to save money and learn how to prep yourself. although most shop aren't gonna trust your prep work anyway..
