are these heads worth building?
« on: June 22, 2008, 04:03:05 pm »
I have head casting 462624 and 333882 are either of these heads worth rebuilding for a steet driven 350? This will just be used as a nice cruiser with some good low end to mid range grunt hopefully. I dont plan on doing any towing and the bottom end of the motor is just going to be stock. Anyone have a good pick for a cam to use also. Maybe the edelbrock performer intake and matched cam? Thanks

I have had bad luck with the 882's, they seem prone to cracking...at least for me anyways.

spend a few bucks and find a decent set of heads. Teenie weenie ports and valves with prone to detonation and cracking chambers = a slug for an engine. Heads cam and intake are where your best mods are at.

If you are looking for some big chamber heads like the 882's or 624's, find some 993 casting or 487/487x casting heads.  They are still 76cc heads, but seem to flow better and the 487's are rumored to be cast thicker in the decks, again, rumored, but they run out better than the 882's and don't get near as hot.  If you run the 624's, they are going to be very thin and you better start liking 210 degrees for a regular no tow, no load operating temp with a 160 stat and a 4 row radiator with a flex fan.  Some 041 or 186 heads are nice 64cc heads with the same characteristics as the old "Camel Hump" heads(186's are camel humps, 041's are camel hump chambers and runners with a different casting design like a right angle on the front and they use the gasket plugs rather than tapered seat.)  Then again the aftermarket seems to be where its at if you can come up with a little greenage.  Summit now sells completely new assembled iron heads with like 160cc runners and 2.02 valves for under 700 assembled.  Just a thought and a bunch of opinion.  Good luck with your build. 8)
