I Need A Cam Recommendation...

I'm having a 350 rebuilt, and I need to order a cam for it. I want one that won't mess anything up, such as robbing my vacuum.

The motor is from an '88 truck I believe, and it's being bored .040 over, if that makes a difference. I want good performance in the mid-range, but I don't want to wander far from stock, to avoid problems. By the way, it's going to be TBI.

well you'll have to be a bit more specific on your set up. What trans do you have? Is this carbureted? What intake? Exhaust? What's your final drive ratio? What is being done to the engine?

Shouldn't he also install stiffer valvesprings with that cam or will the stockers do OK?

Like I said, it's TBI. Sorry, I didn't think the tranny mattered. It's a 700R4. I guess I just want something that I won't have to buy new springs for and I want it to be the biggest possible without messing up vacuum, etc...

ok dont get one of those crapy summit cams there junk! i have ran just about every cam out there and i alway run back to my boys at comp cams! if you want a lot of tork and hp go with comp cams 688h you get real good power from 1500 to about 6500 and you can still run power brakes and did i tell you it has a choppy ideal! and you dont suck gas down like crazy to

Summit cams are far from junk. We've used so many of those cams over the years and every single one of them has degreed in dead nuts and worked perfectly not to mention they are priced nicely. Some of the worst cam failures and poor quality manufacturing jobs I've dealt with have come from and in this order Edelbrock, Comp Cams & trickflow. I wouldn't hesitate to use that Summit cam at all.

The cam Vile is recommending is computer compatible.  TBI has been streched to run on bigger cams but a nice little RV cam like this is always a safe bet.

summit cams are ok and super cheap yes but y not spend a lil bit more and get a good named brand part........if you ask me you would sound pretty okie if you told me you were runnin a summit $55 cam...................put hey if you dont like it wont summit take it back??

I have to agree on the Comp cam failure.  I had a number of them go bad and won't go back.  Currently I use Crane, haven't had a problem yet.  The last one was a used solid that I ran for 8 years.

Name brand has nothing to do with it unless you think throwing around company names is impressive.  Summit is reboxing the cams they are selling AFAIK.

o really? well iv ran a crane 272 and i had 2 lopes go flat.............your right on one thing tho summit cams are just reboxed Lunati cams. well thats what my friend told me that works at summit! but he told me not to run there lifters

Summit had one batch of bad lifters and recalled all of them and shipped everyone who bought them a free set. I still have the set because we never had a failure with any of them. Edelbrock flat out told me they do NOT make their camshafts.
