Tail Pan Replacement And Easiest Way to Remove Bed Bolts
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:49:29 pm »
Hey guys, my 87 swb is in need of some rust repair. The tailpan is rusting away, and the bottom beam, which is actually support for the bed (where the bed bolts go through, it makes contact with truck frame), is rotted away. Tailpan replacement is about $125 and the beam is about $20. I can't really tell but is the tall pan and the beam welded to the bed? Or do the bolts securing the bed bring all these pieces tightly together? Also, I'm going to order a new bed bolt kit. What is the easiest way to remove the old ones? I can almost bet my life on it, that the bolts aren't going to come off without breaking. They are severely corroded. I don't want them to spin in the bed, damaging the square slot. Also, would anti-sieze work best? I'll be removing the bed again, at a later date, when I lower the truck with a c-notch and flip kit.

the floor is one assembly. You can buy an entire new floor section. fastest easiest way to get the bolts out is with a torch

The floor is fine, The only pieces to be replaced are the tailpan, and one of the bottom support beams. The floor, itself, is solid. I was wondering if these were welded to the bottom of the floor, or if they are just sandwiched together via the bed bolts. This way I know if these pieces have to be welded.

The floor is ONE assembly. If you want to patch it you'll have to cut out the bad sections.
