Whining/Rubbing Noise

I've got an '87 R10 with a 305 and a 700R4. I obviously drive around in overdrive, but I was told that using drive is necessary when hauling a load. I had a 900 pound four-wheeler in the back of my truck, so I put it in drive. (Not overdrive) So I give it some gas, and as soon as I let off the throttle to coast, I get this whining noise, like something is rubbing together, I'm not sure. It's definitely coming from the transmission. Does anybody have any ideas on what it could be?
By the way, I tried it once in drive without the four wheeler in the back and it didn't do it. But occasionally I'll get the noise in overdrive or drive without the load. The weight in the back seems to make it much worse though.

You can use overdrive when towing 900lbs if yer cranking along on the highway and don't have 2.73's... you should be running an auxiliary cooler though.
As far as your noise is concerened from what you are describing, it's the pump whining. Are there bubbles on the dipstick? Is the fluid full in park hot running? What does the fluid look like?

I checked the fluid. It's full, it looks okay, and there are no bubbles. My dad smelled it and said it didn't smell too good. (I didn't know it's condition can be determined through smell
) So when he gets back we're going to change the transmission fluid. Unfortunately I don't have a drain plug for the transmission fluid so it'll be a big pain.
Do you think you could explain more about what's going on with the pump? Are you saying it's going bad? This can't be normal. Thanks for your help!

When the fluid gets overheated it aerates which then creates a whine in the pump. Change the fluid and filter. You can install a drain plug kit in your pan for about $5 bucks. While you are at it install an auxiliary oil cooler. You can find all this stuff at autozone.

Vile, not to thread hijack, but when I was driving my truck through the neighbourhood after not driving much (less than 3 miles) for the last 6 months. I got a whine that got louder according to RPM. If I took my foot off the gas, it would stop. I thought it was the power steering fluid,, but it was pretty full, you think maybe the transmission fluid needs to be changed? (I didn't see any bubbles and it was full as well). It's a pretty fresh transmission.

Verify it's not your power steering pump. Either put it into neutral and see if it makes a difference or pop the belt off the p/s pump and see what happens.
