Gross Polluter
« on: August 20, 2008, 01:18:05 pm »
Finally got my truck running. It still needs a tune up but it is running strong. I took it to a smog shop today to get it smogged, he put it on the machine for about 5 minutes and pulled it off, telling me that it would fail for sure. Said that right now he could see it was going to be a gross polluter and that the (GP) gets reported to the DMV so he stopped the test. I am really at my wits end, not to mention my bank account's end. I can't afford to fix it, nor can I afford to scrap it. Anyone in the Riverside, CA area that could help me get this thing fixed up properly. Basically I need O2 Sensor, all new plugs, wires, cap&rotor, cat convertor, and a couple other sensors that are not on the engine. Right now quote is $700 and he doesn't really think it will pass once the work is done.  Any words of encouragement would help.

Oh yes I guess I should describe the truck.. It is an 87 shortbed silverado flleetside V6.

Thanks for the help... the only issue is once you fail the test twice you then have to go to a test only facility and then the work can only be done by a California State Approved Gold Member, so addressing each issue individually may not be an option... The state has already offered me $1000 to buy it now as it is, but it is worth much than that.

Geesh!  $1000 buy it, that's a joke!
What did you do to get it running?
How many miles are on it?
What all sensors are missing?
Are you getting any codes?

I will create an update for my other post. But I had to get everything for the fuel system from the harness back rewired. Cost about $280 including parts. Mileage right now as it stands is 133k. Haven' even tried to get codes on it, don't have any dummy lights, but I guess I'm a dummy they could be out. I will try to get some codes this afternoon. As far as what sensors are missing I don't even know.

Seems to me there is OR WAS a CARB program that allows you a one year exemption if you can't pass smog and it costs some certain amount of dollars to comply... this is of course if your income level meets a certain limit... in other words darn-near-dirt-poor. Sounds like maybe you've looked into that already since you mention the $1000 scrap offer aka CAP (Consumer Assistance Program) You might do some more research on this...

"Per the Governor's Executive Order issued on July 31, 2008 concerning the state budget, Referee and Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) Repair Assistance, and Vehicle Retirement services have been suspended until further notice. We apologize for any inconvenience. Consumers may call the Department of Consumer Affairs, Consumer Information Center at (800) 952-5210. Also, please check our web site periodically to confirm when both Referee and CAP services will resume."

Ok... I'll join this little debate! Kalifornia is NOT as far LEFT COAST as portrayed back east. I say "back east" because I'm from there and have lived here over 25yrs and travel fairly often back and forth. But there's no doubt, folks here talk one way then vote another... go figure. As far as I can determine, people here always seem to vote for liberal ideas because I think they've all been out in the sun too long drinking mucho cervasas w/limes stuck in the top... lot's of that here you know. (yuk, yuk)

Seriously though, pollution is a major problem in this the state and when it comes to compliance, I'm all for it. Meanwhile, back at the ranch(ero)

Pardon me for sayin' Sarge, but that Glock-gif of yours is puttin' out more smoke than an old '72 Kenworth comin' down the steep-side of Cajon Pass w/jake-brake full-on and binders goin' red-hot.... what's up with that? Don't get me wrong now 'cause I'm no anti-gunner but my Model 21 hardly makes a puff o' smoke and I'm shootin' everything they got including re-loads... (mostly, she likes Federal Nickle-plated brass though) Ooops, not tryin' to high-jack this thread now... but I know that a lot of folks are floored to learn that the government here will actually give you money to junk your old vehicle because believe it or not, the pollution problem here is THAT BAD.

Solution: if you're living in Kalifornia, buy anything made before 1975 and you're free to do whatever you want as far as vehicle mods and no smog check to hassle with... until the State Kommissars decide otherwise...and I digress.

This thread goes from sniffing exhausts to sniffing Glocks. The smoke you see is a result of the powder and grain used--I assume.  'Taint me shooting.  I saw that Gif somewhere and saved it.  Some ammo shoot cleaner than others. When we are at our shooting range, we really don't see too much smoke--it is the flying shells you must dodge, especially when 20 people are on the line.  Button up that top collar so you wont have burn marks on your chest!  I dont know what Glock that is, but neither my Glock 20 or Glock 17 does that either.

As for the '72 Kenworth, man I love those classics--what's aerodynamics?  I watched Convoy just last night with Kris Kristopherson.  There were some old rigs in that old flick of the 70's. How 'boutya Rubber Duck?

If any of you non-Californians are ever looking for a real nice deal on used trucks, Southern CA (the mostly desert areas) is the area to search.  If they have moderate mileage and are close to failing the sniffer test, you can pick them up quite inexpensively.  Being from the desert, they have no rust either.
