Anyone have/had a boss like this?????
« on: August 22, 2008, 01:13:43 am »
I'm in a ranting mood...so anyhow...Last week at work, my boss decided to be a prankster and put a sticker on the tailgate of my '82 and we'll leave the details of the decal anonymous.  Anyways, when I went to peel it off, took the paint with it.  Needless to say it royally P****d me off because of that.  So I told him today what it did and how it made me feel, I was civil with it, just keepin calm as I could be.  Well about 5 min later I was in the back and he got in my face, threatening to fire me, called me a few choice things, and told me if what he did to my truck made me feel the way it did, I can just go clock out and not worry about coming back in.  I don't wanna just stand back and let this go by.  I need suggestions on what to do.  Most people told me just to go over his head and call home office and report what happened, but do it anonymously, and give them my personal cell number instead of the store number.  But it just doesn't seem right, It's like I am the bad guy even though I did not do that!  WTH?

Report it, document it on paper and hand it personally to his boss. Don't do it annonymously.

I would report not annonymously.

Agreed, this needs to be reported to his boss and keep going up the chain until your satisfied. Say something about the prank-gone-wrong and the nature of the sticker and his reaction and threats when you brought it to his attention. Also, include an estimate of the damage. Don't exagerate, just the facts will suffice.

*Edit*
Be sure to begin a job search, just incase. It's always good to have a plan.

There's nothing worse than to have a bulley for a boss. He  doesn't deserve the position and he's afraid of his own future, knowing he may get fired for this prank. So he's trying to intimidate you so you'll keep quiet. It does put you in a dilemma. Let him know he needs to personally take care of the damages or his superiors will receive a letter. Also inform him you won't stand for his intimidation. Good luck with it. But stand up to him.

I would tell him calmly that you expect him to reimburse you for the damages and you will be getting an estimate for him and you are going to be speaking with your attorney and you will be contacting HR about the matter.

Then I would call HR, and report it. And then I would get a written Report the damage, his threats and actions and an estimate of the damage to his boss.

He cannot fire you for something HE did.  He is just trying threaten you into submission.

At my place of work this would be considered "horseplay" (any act, not work related, that leads to damage for personal injury) and is grounds for investigation pending termination.

Report it, get it documented and if he decides to retaliate against you...report him for discrimination or file a harassment suit against him.

Also, if it happened on work property, the company is responsible for the damages. They WILL NOT like to do this and will probably can him just for that.

I'd call it bullying. Ok, he played a prank and it went wrong. He needs to be accountable for his actions and the only way is the HR Dept ASAP. How can you respect a boss like that. Once HR are made aware, any further threats from him are victimisation and the "if you don't like it-leave" is constructive dismissal.

Stand your ground and dont back down! Time is of the essence though on this matter! Document everything! Gather some witness statements as well.

I wouldn't call the police to take a report, then it turns criminal. That may be avenue later.

However, because he threatened you, hmmm, I'd turn the tables on him and tell HIS boss and report it whichever your company reports things.  That way it is documented in case something happens later down the road.  When you report it, also put in the report what your boss told you.

If something happens down the road, your attorney will be more than happy to take the case. 30 % of punitive damages wont be bad.

Also, let them know that unless repairs are not paid, civil actions in court will make them pay, in addition, added fees such as time off work, attorneys fees, court filing fees, etc..AND, let them know you don't appreciate what your boss said, that is a case in and of itself.

Let them know you mean business.  They will back off and pay whatever needs to be paid prior to you filing any court case.

It seems obvoius that he is threatening you in hopes that you will let it go without any further action. Knowing, obviously, that we was terribly wrong and that if you do report it to his supervisor that he will be in terrible trouble. If thing happened just as you say they did, report him. And make sure he knows you did. People like that need to be kept in check.

...the nature of the sticker...

This right here is enough to have him fired, and you with a large sum of money in your hands if you take it to a lawyer. I mean if i am assuming the correct "nature of the sticker". Oh, and take a lot of pictures and KEEP the sticker. Real important.
