What a woderful birthday this will be.............
« on: March 08, 2007, 06:32:00 am »
So the 9th is my birthday I'll be 21 years old which is nice. I've been married since I was 18 and have a 15 month old son. Around 8:30 last night I was informed that me wife wants a divorce. What a great birthday prestent huh? So I've been racking my brains trying to figure out how everything that was so great turned to @#%$? You know she is the one person I would do anything for. So my first reaction was to be furious but that wouldn't solve anything. Second I said I would just pack up and leave but I have a terrific son to take care of. Third which came after I had a chance to process everything is to let her go and try to remain as close to her as I can and maintain a relationship with her for my son's sake. So I just wanted to tell everyone about my awesome birthday present!

Keep a polite relationship with her as your son needs it!!  He comes first no matter what is between you and the ex.  I know, easier said than done!

I have a 5 year old from a previous relationship (not married) and we broke up when he was 5 months old.  I had to go to court for shared custody and visitation as she wanted me to walk away so she could have me out of her life.  After a year or two she realized i would always be in her life for the sake of our son and we now have a pretty good relationship.

Once all the hurt and painful feelings subside and people move on, you will be suprised how easy it can be to have a friendly relationship with an ex when something as important as a child is involved.  Hopefully she will understand how important your relationship is with her for your son's overall health, growth, and stability.

Best of luck.

My prayers go out to you and your family.  I can sympathize with your situation.  Definitely try to keep good relations with her.

My 30th birthday present was a divorce too. Best thing to do before either of you actually file for a divorce is for you to get rid of everything! I mean it. Any personal possesion you own will become a frozen asset the minute you file. Take every penny out of the bank and say you lost it at the casino, everything. Unless you were treating her like crap the only reason she probably wants a divorce is to be with another man so don't let him enjoy your toys! Divorces get ugly quick and I feel for ya but just remember - women can be ruthless and every state favors the woman no matter what 99% of the time.

Vile, so right you are abut the courts favoring the women.  In my job, I have sat on many, many domestic cases.  The woman could be a druggy or burglar with a mile long criminal history sheet, the kid will go to the mother almost always.

And I thought discrimination based on sex was against the law.

Going for my meeting with the lawyer on the 2nd of April. I'm trying to get full custody of my son and transfered all the titles to my vehicles to my father so she's not getting any of those and everything I'm "selling" to my best friend so we'll see where we go from there. So far we have actually been able to remain sociable and have actually had a few friendy conversations. Thank you for all of your support thus far.

Good luck dude!
I would have been better off if I was maried to my ex. I would have got half of our stuff. House was in her name but like a moron I dumped $20,000 and three years of every spare moment of my life into it. She screwed around behind my back and got it all.

My parents divorced when I was seven.  It is hard, especially for you(the dad).  You have to do so much more work to even be seen as a human in the eyes of the court.  Make sure you let them know that all you want is to be with your son.  Don't try to get a heap of money(getting rid of the stuff is still a good plan though.)  Keep your mind on the only important part, YOUR SON.  He comes before everything else.
