6 liter swap
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:34:08 pm »
Chris, I'm going to help a friend install a 6.0/auto in a '65 GMC 1/2 ton 2wd, we are using the front suspension from an '84. He's a very capeable mechanic. My part will be general helping & the fab work. I went through your posts on your swap. In the end, would you recommend the second set of engine mounts or should I make them. If they work out well & are under about $150 it would be worth it to just buy them I'm thinking. For the exhaust, did the truck manifolds fit reasonably well & you just decided to go to the headers or didn't any of the manifolds work out? As far as the wiring/ecm, ect. would you use the stock harness again or do a Painless or someones stand alone unit? Like allot of us, he has multiple projects going. He has a '65 Chevy 1/2 ton 2wd that we put the new front, power brakes, Ramjet 502 w/Richmond 6 speed, air & all. Some of the stuff (front end, brake booster, ect.) will be easier this time around since we did the figuring on the last one. The new truck has a Dana 44 rear with 3.54 gears, it will stay for a while, probably just do springs & spindles in the front & a flip in the rear to get it sitting better. Any input would be great from anyone who has done the LS swap. Much appreciated. Thanks, Lorne

As far as engine mounts, I personally would get a piece of 3/8" plate, mark it and drill the holes and use the factory clams on it.  One will need a countersunk head.  ( I actually plan to make a couple of these myself )

If you factory harness was good and not hacked up, I would use it and just remove the pieces you don't need.  Mine had half the end of it missing along with a whole section going to the fuse panel.

The truck manifolds didn't work for me.  F-body manifolds did.  If the Thorleys don't get completed before I want to get it running, I may use those, or build me a set of headers since I have to have the whole exhaust built for the turbo's.

Chris, Did it turn out to be just the '98 F-body manifolds that fit or any of them? This will be kinda a low buck, daily driver item so headers aren't a must if some readily available manifolds fit. Anything else you can think of that may pose a problem? Thanks, Lorne

Those thorley's look like they're gonna be nice.  One thing I did notice on our trucks(73-87) is that some trucks seem to be different(as far as fitting headers).  I couldn't fit truck mani's or headers, so I cut until I could fit F-bod headers.  A buddy used F-bod headers and didn't have to cut.  A guy on another forum used truck headers.  Another guy used truck mani's.  Maybe it all depends on the motor mounts?

It depends on the year of the manifolds.  The ones that I used were off the truck, I had to ground the Emmissions stuff off and plug some holes.  They were 2000 6.0L manifolds.
