My question is where did the wire go? The battery cable positive goes to the B+ terminal on the starter and the S terminal comes from the ignition switch.

also when i disconnected the original starter the bat cable and the two other cables (i'm guessing is the fusable link) were connected to the big post ant there was an eyelet attached to the small post but no wire in it.

Well you need to find the wire. It probably just seperated. As far as it arcing, your b+ connection is probably touching the starter housing.

Last weekend I put a new starter  on my 91 sub.  Boy, the difference!  I replaced it because the solenoid was acting up--had to tap on the starter housing twice in about three months to get the thing started. (stuck solenoid).  That puppy turns my 350 over so quick now, i couldn't believe the difference.

Anyway, the B+ big positive cable has a type of hook on the eyelet that goes over the post, and hooks in place to prevent the cable from twisting any.  It is a close fit with all the wires, fusible link, ground of the casing, etc so you have to be careful when putting the wires back.

Yes, the fusible link little red wire goes on the smaller post below the B+, with an eyelet to keep it on--it is a very small nut, smaller than a 3/8 inch wrench.

I hate changing starters on a 4x4, with the hogs head in the way, and the bracket from the frame with a rubber bump stop--had to take that off to get the starter off.

 ???

The fusible links should attach to the same B+ terminal that the battery cable goes to. The S terminal is the switched ignition wire.

Sorry, that's what I meant.  The fusible link red wire is a little smaller and the two go on the big post. :o

The wire should be coming from the junction block on the firewall, it is shaped like a diamond, wires should come off of it and split and go to the alternator and the starter if I am remembering correctly.

The S terminal wire comes from the ignition switch to the neutral safety switch. there is one connector and then it goes to the S terminal on the starter solenoid. It is only energized when you are holding the key in the cranking position in Park or Neutral.

You have to get on your back and look up to the steering column from the floorboard.  It is on the top side of the steering collumn. Its a pain to get to, but, changing it isn't too bad. If I remember correctly, you have to place a pin or something to hold the position of the switch as you install it.  Two screws, then pop the wires off.
